Indians earn two big wins at Crestview invite (10/03/05)

CONVOY, Ohio — All season the Indians had been looking for a victory against a state-ranked team. Saturday they got two.
Fort Recovery went 2-1 at the Crestview Invitational, defeating the Division IV No. 10 host Knights 25-23, 27-25 and Indiana’s Class 3A No. 6 Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets 23-25, 25-12, 15-12.
The lone loss of the day came to Division IV No. 1 Sidney Lehman Catholic 25-20, 25-17. It marked the second time this season the Indians had lost to Lehman.
Tiff Gaerke powered the first big victory of the season for the Tribe, which moved to 11-6 on the season with all six losses coming against state-ranked competition. She finished with 17 kills, six digs, six points and one block against Crestview.
Jennalee Post had 19 assists, Vicki Roessner came up with 11 digs, Julie Link scored seven points and Lauren Wenning had four blocks.
Gaerke totaled 16 kills against Concordia, and Post had 22 assists. Holly Stein scored 10 points, including two aces, Wenning had seven blocks and Roessner and Brittany Brackman each notched three digs.
Lehman limited Fort Recovery to just 16 total kills, 11 of which came from Gaerke. Brackman and Gaerke each scored four points, and Roessner had four digs.
Junior varsity
FORT LORAMIE, Ohio — After suffering their first loss of the season Thursday, Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team split a pair of matches Saturday at Fort Loramie. The Indians (11-2) opened with a 25-16, 25-19 victory over Ansonia, but dropped their second match 21-25, 25-15, 16-14 to the host Redskins.
Heather Schmackers led the opening victory with team highs of 32 assists and nine points. She also had four digs.
Joanna Snyder had eight points and four digs, and Sarah Braun totaled eight blocks and five kills. LeAnne Tobin had five digs, and Annie Koesters finished with three kills.
Braun racked up six blocks, six kills, seven points and three digs in the tight loss to Fort Loramie. Angie Wenning had eight points and five digs, both team highs.
Snyder had seven kills and four digs, Tobin added seven kills and Schmackers had 23 assists.
Junior high
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s middle school volleyball teams each picked up victories Saturday. The eighth grade squad earned its eighth straight win by a 25-15, 25-22 score over the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks, and the seventh grade team defeated Mississinawa Valley 25-22, 25-14.
Sylvia Schwieterman paced the eighth grade team with nine points as it improved to 11-1 on the year. She also had three kills.
Chelsey Leuthold finished with five points and four kills, and Emily May added five points and three kills. Josie Guggenbiller totaled nine assists, and Nicole Pottkotter had four kills.
Olivia Thien powered the seventh grade Indians (6-5) with 12 points. Holly Brunswick added 10 points.[[In-content Ad]]
