Indians fall to 0-2 (12/01/03)
FRHS girls basketball
Even with excellent shooting from a trio of starters the Fort Recovery girls basketball team couldn’t pick up a victory Saturday night. Instead, the Memorial (St. Mary’s) Roughriders took advantage of turnovers and free throws as two players reached double figures in a 69-53 defeat of the Indians.
Joscie Kaup, Ciera Rammel and Jenn Stahl shot very well for the Tribe (0-2), finishing a combined 17-for-26 (65 percent). They combined to scored 39 of their team’s 53 points, but could not overcome Krissy Haines and Haley Fannon.
Haines finished 9-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line for 24 points. Fannon was 9-of-13 on field goals and 6-of-10 from the line for 25 points.
The pair’s 12 points on free throws doubled the Indians’ total from the foul line. Overall Memorial was 18-of-26 on free throws compared to just 6-for-12 for Fort Recovery.
The Roughriders (2-0) built their lead in the first and third quarters. They outscored the Tribe 19-9 in the first and 26-14 in the third, taking advantage of a 21-11 turnover differential.
Memorial also had 13 steals — including four each for Haines and Fannon — compared to just two for Fort Recovery.
Kaup paced the Indians with 16 points and three assists, and Stahl added 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Rammel had nine points and five assists.
Junior varsity
The Indian junior varsity team built a 24-16 halftime lead, but its offense went stagnant in the second half of a 35-31 defeat.
Fort Recovery (1-1) scored just seven points in the second half, including two in the third quarter. They shot just 3-of-23 — 13 percent — from the field after the intermission.
Tiff Gaerke was the lone Indian in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Renee Evers added nine points.
Gaerke and Evers shared a team high with five rebounds apiece. Julie Link dished out four assists and added three steals.
