Indians get first victory (12/05/05)

UNION CITY, Ohio — After getting dominated in the fourth quarter of their opening game Friday, the Indians played tough in the final period to pick up their first win a day later.
Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team had a one-point lead heading into the final period and fought off the host Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks for a 47-45 victory Saturday.
The Indians (1-1) also had a lead in Friday’s opener at Kalida, but got outscored by 12 in the final period.
Senior Travis VanSkyock led the Tribe to its first victory, scoring 20 points. He hit three 3-pointers as he shared the game-high scoring total with Mississinawa Valley’s Kyle Linder.
Saturday’s game was close throughout, with the Indians trailing by one after the first quarter and four at halftime before grabbing the lead in the third period.
Ryan Staugler added eight points for Fort Recovery, and Luke Bihn scored seven points.
Josh Setser followed Linder, who nailed four 3-pointers, for the Blackhawks with nine points.
The Indians will play their first home game of the season Friday vs. Versailles.

The Indians dominated the second and third quarters in both games on the way to a couple of big victories.
The Fort Recovery junior varsity team outscored Mississinawa Valley 27-12 during the middle two quarters on the way to a 47-28 victory. The margin was even wider in the freshman game as the Tribe took a 24-5 advantage during the center span en route to a 41-23 win.
Lucas Staugler scored 21 points for Fort Recovery’s JV squad, which is now 1-1. Wes Kahlig added 11 points.
Brent Faller scored 15 points as the freshman team won its first game. Frank Thien had eight points, and Tom Will scored seven.[[In-content Ad]]
