COLDWATER, Ohio - The Indians picked up the defensive intensity and ran away with the game.

The lesson they learned - simple is better.

After toying with a variety of defenses in the first half, Fort Recovery simplified its strategy in the second. It went to a standard man-to-man look, pressured the ball and forced a flurry of turnovers during an 11-0 run to a 54-39 victory over the Fort Loramie Redskins on the opening night of the Mercer Health 2007 Holiday Basketball Classic.

Despite running out to an eight-point lead in the first four minutes, the Indians (7-1) trailed by two at the half and were still down 33-31 late in the third quarter. That's when the Tribe's defense took control.

After Greg Kahlig, the game's high scorer with 22 points, hit for five consecutive points to put Fort Recovery in the lead, Frank Thien came up with a steal and weaved down the court for the final two points of the third. Thien's swipe represented one of the Redskins' 10 second-half turnovers - they gave the ball away just three times before the intermission - as he and Toby Metzger harassed them at the point of attack in the second half.

"We were mixing up some defenses a little bit, trying to get them a little off guard and not feeling comfortable," said FRHS coach Brian Patch of his team's defensive look in the first half. "Actually it probably made our guys feel more uncomfortable ..."

Patch said an assistant coach suggested the change to man-to-man, and the game turned from there.

"In the second half we decided to go smaller, put five guards out there that we thought maybe could play a little better defense," added Patch. "Frankie Thien stepped his pressure up on the ball and made them feel uncomfortable and everyone else stepped up their defensive performance as well."

After Thien's bucket to close the third quarter, Clint Tobe hit a free throw and a 3-pointer off a Metzger assist to start the fourth and cap the 11-0 run. The Indians led by at least seven points the rest of the way as Fort Loramie (6-3) managed just two field goals in the fourth quarter.

Fort Recovery outscored the Redskins' 33-16 in the second half with a 61-percent effort from the field.

Kahlig, a sophomore, set the pace with his 10-of-16 shooting night. He hit for 63 percent overall, made nine of his 12 two-point attempts (75 percent) and grabbed three rebounds.

Tobe added 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, to go along with three rebounds and three blocks. Toby Metzger followed with seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

"A lot of that is Greg Kahlig, who's a pretty good shooter, got hot," said Patch of his team's 52 percent shooting overall against Fort Loramie. "And then, to our guys' credit, they kept feeding him the ball and he kept going at it. ... And then they started worrying about that and Clint started getting to the hole, getting pull-ups and he stepped up and hit some shots."

The Indians had control early as it used a 10-2 run to take a 12-4 lead, but could not sustain it. Still up 14-10 late in the first quarter, the Tribe went nearly six minutes without scoring a point and Fort Loramie eventually pulled ahead on a Josh Hilgefort 3-pointer to open the second quarter.

The Redskins never led by more than four points, and Fort Recovery reclaimed the advantage for good with the 11-0 run.

The win was the sixth in a row for the Indians. Five of their six victories have come by double digits, and their only loss was in triple overtime to Wapakoneta.

"Coming into the game I thought Fort Loramie was going to be the best team we probably will have faced up to this point," said Patch. "Coming out and playing the way we did tonight, I was really happy with our effort and how we executed for the most part. Right now obviously you'd like to have that one game back, but 7-1 is not too shabby."

FORT LORAMIE, Ohio - The Indians managed just five points in the fourth quarter, but that was enough for a 30-29 victory over Fort Loramie.

Fort Recovery gave up 16 points in the third period to squander a halftime lead and trail by two heading into the final quarter. But it bounced back, using a 5-2 advantage in the fourth to eke out the victory.

Craig Tobe had eight points and three rebounds to lead the Indians, who limited the Redskins to just 35 percent shooting. Josh Wendel added six points, and Brady Kahlig totaled five rebounds and three assists.

Mitch Raterman had game highs of 14 points - he shot 6-of-10 - and eight rebounds for Fort Loramie. Justin Hoying followed with eight points and four steals.[[In-content Ad]]
