Indians lose heart-breaker to Ansonia

FRHS football

ANSONIA, Ohio - Fort Recovery gained almost all of its yards through the air. Ansonia did a majority of its damage on the ground.

But when the host Tigers needed it most, one big pass helped them hand the Tribe a heart-wrenching loss.

Quarterback Derek Bubeck's 40-yard pass to Dylan Bubeck was the key play on the final drive that ended with Dusty Holcomb scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run to give Ansonia a 52-48 victory over the Indians.

The game was a wild offensive slugfest, with both teams scoring at least one touchdown in every quarter. Greg Kahlig of the Indians tossed for 479 yards and six touchdowns while Ansonia had two running backs clear the 100-yard mark.

The fourth lead-change of the evening came with just 2:52 to play, when Greg Kahlig hit Michael Gaerke with a 24-yard touchdown pass. The play put the Tribe up 48-44, erasing what was a 10-point deficit less than six minutes earlier.

The Tigers were up to the challenge.

Needing a touchdown, Ansonia used three running plays before the Bubecks hooked up on the 40-yard passing play that pushed the ball to the 5-yard line. The Indians' defense held up for three plays only to have Holcomb score on a 1-yard run.

There was time left for the Tigers to kickoff, but Fort Recovery could not muster a return.

Along with their late strike, Kahlig and Gaerke connected on TDs of 30 and 43 yards as the Indians scored 20 first-quarter points.

Kahlig tossed TD passes of seven yards to Cody Fiely, 49 yards to Craig Tobe and 57 yards to Nathan Keller while adding one rushing TD.

Gaerke caught nine passes for 153 yards, and Tobe caught seven balls for 132 yards.

Ansonia, which led 28-26 at halftime and pushed ahead 44-34 with 8:31 left in the game, got 123 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Jordan Gilbert. Holcomb added 113 yards and two TDs on the ground.

Derek Bubeck completed just four passes, but they went for 103 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
