FORT RECOVERY - Time after time the Indians seemed ready to pull away, only to see their lead dwindle again. That is, until the fourth quarter.

The Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team opened the final period with a 10-1 run and never allowed their lead to slip to single digits again as it defeated the visiting Greenville Green Wave 69-57.

The Indians' advantage was just three points heading into the fourth quarter, but Kelsey Wuebker's hoop off a Nicole Pottkotter assist got them going on the decisive run. Pottkotter followed with a 3-pointer of her own off an assist from Joanna Snyder.

Kendra Brunswick's third 3-pointer of the game - she hit back-to-back triples during a key second-quarter spurt - pushed the lead into double digits. A Pottkotter put-back completed the run, and FRHS (2-0) led by as many as 15 before settling on the 12-point final margin.

The win was built on a balanced scoring effort, with four Indians in double figures and 11 in the scorebook overall.

Chelsea Leuthold, who hit two of the Tribe's three baskets in a 7-0 run to open the game, shot 7-of-11 for a game-high 15 points. Joanna Snyder and Brunswick (3-of-4 from 3-point range) each scored 13, and Pottkotter added 10.

"I think we can be a deep team when this thing is all said and done with, and that's what we're trying to get incorporated right now," said second-year coach Doug Bihn. "You just never know when injuries are going to happen or when fouls are going to happen ... Annie (Koesters is) not playing now, so you've just got to get prepared for the future and get those kids ready. I think that'll help us ... down the road somewhere."

The Indians hit for 55 percent from the field against Greenville, including a sizzling 68 percent (15-of-22) in the second half.

Still, Fort Recovery couldn't put the game away until the final period.

It looked ready to run away from the Green Wave from the opening tip, but Greenville quickly cut the Tribe's seven-point lead to just 11-9. The Indians pushed back ahead by nine early in the second quarter only to have the visitors score 17 points in the final 4:34 of the half to pull within two again.

"We don't have that mentality yet," said Bihn. "We just don't know how to put teams away, and I'm not sure why. It's something we're going to have to, hopefully, establish sometime this season. We can't let teams hang around."

The Green Wave (1-3) led briefly in the third quarter, but it lasted for just 17 seconds and Fort Recovery finally took control with its fourth-quarter run.

Despite the defeat, Greenville coach Thomas Kukasky said he was pleased with the progress his team is making.

The squad brings back just six points from last season's team, which included Macie Blinn, who has started five games this season for Illinois.

"I couldn't be more proud of my kids," said Kukasky. "They just battled.

"I was extremely pleased. We've got two sophomores that start ... In our first game against Celina we were down 25 at halftime and just fell apart. Tonight we hung tough ..."

Alexa Hetzler scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the Green Wave, and Jena Studabaker added 11 points and six rebounds. Aireca Hetzler had five rebounds, and Ashlee Hetzler added two assists.

Although his team improved to 2-0 on the year, Bihn still saw plenty of room for improvement. The Indians turned the ball over 23 times, and allowed Greenville to shoot 59 percent from the field in the first half.

"We still gave up too many points," said Bihn. "Fifty-seven points is too many for us to give up. It was a better game than we played last week ... but we still have to get better on the defensive end. ... We had way too many turnovers."

The Indians made nearly as many field goals as Greenville attempted, rolling to a 68-12 victory.

Holly Brunswick racked up 17 points for the Tribe, shooting 5-of-7 from the field. Olivia Schwieterman followed with nine points, and Kristan Wendel made all of her four field-goal attempts for eight points.

Kelly Nietfeld had seven rebounds, and Alyssa Brackman dished out five assists.

Kacie Forman led the Green Wave, which got shut out in the fourth quarter, with six points. Jessie Dorsten grabbed five rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
