FORT RECOVERY — Show anyone the tape of Saturday’s fourth quarter and they’d be impressed with the Fort Recovery girls basketball team’s hustle. However, that eight minutes of all-out effort was not enough for the Tribe to overcome the first three periods.

The visiting Wapakoneta Redskins (4-2) put together a pair of big runs earlier in the game and withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally to hand the Indians a 65-54 defeat Saturday.

“We didn’t do anything in the second quarter to slow them down,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner of the stretch when Wapakoneta seized control of the contest. “I really felt like we aided them in the second quarter.”

The Indians (2-5) trailed by just five points after Alyssa Tobe’s only bucket of the game, but they never got that close again. Following Tobe’s score Wapakoneta went on a 9-0 run in the final two minutes of the first half for a 35-21 halftime lead.

The Redskins’ top two scorers led the rally as freshman Lindsey Kentner started it with a 3-pointer, and Krissy Koester scored four points.

Fort Recovery came out with a renewed focus in the second half, opening with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to six points. But, Wapakoneta responded with a 13-2 stretch to push its lead all the way to 17 points.

The late comeback try by the Indians was inspiring, but they couldn’t complete it after pulling to within 57-52 with two minutes to play.

“I give credit to Fort Recovery,” said Wapakoneta coach Cortney Rogers. “They’re not going to roll over and let you have the lead. They pressed us, and it got to us.”

Still, no amount of pressure was enough to overcome Kentner and Koester.

It seemed every time there was a loose ball on the Redskins’ offensive end, Wapakoneta would recover it and swing the ball to Kentner. She consistently buried her open shots, finishing 6-of-8 from the field on the way to 17 points.

Koester was just as potent, hitting on seven of her 11 attempts from the field and all of her six tries from the line for 20 points. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The pair led the team to 50-percent shooting in the first half and 48 percent for the game.

Lindsey West added a 6-for-6 free throw finish as the Redskins’ were an outstanding 19-of-21 from the line overall.

“Lindsey (Kentner) had a great game,” said Rogers. “She’s a freshman, so there shouldn’t be any pressure there. Whatever she gives us any night is great.”

Fort Recovery got a boost from a fresh body off the bench as freshman Tiff Gaerke took to the court for her first varsity action. She scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds — all in the fourth quarter — serving as a spark as the Indians tried to battle back.

The Tribe was led by freshman Holly Stein, who scored the first seven Indian points and had nine of her team-high 11 in the first quarter. Joscie Kaup followed with nine points, and Krystal Rammel had eight, but Fort Recovery never overcame a 28-percent shooting first half in which it tended to take shots far to quickly.

Roessner said he was happy with the infusion of energy from Gaerke, and with the way Stein started the contest. He also praised the fourth-quarter effort from the team, but said he thought his squad looked out of shape during the two big runs which gave Wapakoneta control.

Conditioning will be one of the things he works on with his team as it takes 10 days off. The Indians will return to action at Jay County Tuesday Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. as they try to climb back toward .500.

“I’d rather be 6-1 right now, but 2-5 is where we’re at,” Roessner said. “We’ve got 13 games left. We have a chance to go on a run.”

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity girls basketball team dominated the third quarter en route to a 40-30 win over Wapakoneta.

The Indians (5-2) shot 56 percent in the second half after trailing 11-8 at the intermission. They outscored the Redskins 22-7 in the third period to pull away.

Julie Link led the scoring for the Tribe with eight points, and Kelsie Will and Kelly Link each had seven. Sara Fortkamp scored six points, and Tiff Gaerke and Renee Evers added five apiece.

Fortkamp also had team highs of seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.

Chelse Hemstetter led Wapakoneta with 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Abby Snider had eight points and five boards.[[In-content Ad]]
