FORT RECOVERY — When the Indians got the leadoff hitter on base, they made it count. The Botkins Trojans didn’t.

The Fort Recovery softball team put its first hitter on base in four out of six innings, and scored at least one run each time. Botkins had its first batter on base six out of seven times, but only scored in one frame as it lost 10-4 to the Tribe Friday night.

“Our defense played well and we hit the ball well,” said FRHS coach Marie Osterholt. “It’s very encouraging. I think they got it in their heads now that they’re ready to win some ball games. I think they need stay loose and have confidence because they are a good team and they just need to know that and come out and show out.”

The Indians (6-9) got tremendous production from the top of their order, especially leadoff hitter Val Fortkamp. She reached base in each of her five at-bats and accounted for half of the Tribe runs.

The sophomore got on base on an error to lead off the game, moved to second on a single by Ciera Rammel and to third on a sacrifice bunt from Renee Evers. She scored on an infield single from Kelsie Will.

She doubled in the second and came in on the first of Evers’ two triples, then notched an infield single in the third and scored on an RBI walk from Will. In the fifth she ripped a single to right field, stole second base, ran to third on an overthrow and scored on an RBI single from Rammel. And in the sixth she reached base on another error and scored on the second triple from Evers.

No. 2 hitter Ciera Rammel went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and added three more runs. Evers was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, Kinsey Wenning had two hits and Beth May scored the other run.

“Wow, that’s super,” said Osterholt when she looked at the score book to see Fortkamp’s run production. “That’s what she’s supposed to be doing. That’s great. I’m very happy with them tonight.”

Not only did Botkins (3-10) have its first hitter reach base six times, but it had runners in scoring position in six out of seven innings as well.

After falling behind 5-0 it managed four runs in the third inning, but failed to score again.

Fort Recovery’s defense had a lot to do with stopping the Trojans’ efforts, coming up with big third outs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth.

There were two outs and runners on second and third in the second inning when Kinsey Wenning tossed a perfect change up, freezing No. 9 hitter Kristy Fullenkamp for the third strike. With runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth Fortkamp, the center fielder, made a tremendous diving catch on a line drive by clean-up hitter Kristen Altstaetter to shallow left-center field.

In the fifth Kinsey Wenning again came up with a big strikeout, this time with Ashley Featheringham swinging at the third strike. Second baseman Ciera Rammel closed out the sixth, ranging to her right to backhand a sharp grounder and flip it to first for the final out.

“(Fort Recovery) opened the door for us quite a bit and we didn’t capitalize on it,” said Botkins coach Bryan Trego, whose team failed to fully cash in on eight walks and several errors. “That’s part of the game. You’ve got to make your plays when the opportunities are there

“We didn’t do a real good job ... One inning we did and that’s the way we need to play all the time. We stranded a lot of girls.”

Abby Meyer led the Trojans, going 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Altstaetter added a single, a run and an RBI.

Kristy Olberman took the defeat, allowing 10 runs — five earned — on 15 hits and three walks in six innings.

The Indian victory went to Kinsey Wenning, who allowed four runs on four hits. She struck out five batters, including four in the first two innings as the Tribe built its lead.

After a seven-game losing streak, Fort Recovery has now won three out of the last four.

“I hope so,” said Osterholt when asked if her team has turned the corner. “We’ve got a double-header (Saturday). We’ll just come out and play a couple more games and play the best we can.”

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team lost 12-2 to Jay County Friday night. No statistics were available from the contest.[[In-content Ad]]
