Indians roll to big win (10/13/07)
FRHS football
NEW BREMEN, Ohio - An early game outburst held up, and the best full-schedule season in school history got a little better.
Fort Recovery, scoring the first 21 points of the game, coasted to a 35-21 win over host New Bremen here Friday night.
The Indians, who put up a fight early last week before losing by 32 points to top-ranked Marion Local, improve to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in Midwest Athletic Conference play.
The five regular season victories are the most since the Indians began playing a full MAC schedule in 1995 (they were 4-6 in 1997) and the four MAC wins are two more than the previous best.
The final two games of the season are Friday at Coldwater and at home Oct. 27 against St. Henry.
Another big night from record-setting sophomore quarterback Greg Kahlig sparked Fort offensively. Kahlig, who set school records for yards and completions two weeks ago, threw four touchdowns and no interceptions Friday against the Cardinals. He completed 18-of-27 attempts for 242 yards.
Toby Metzger was the most productive and frequent target, pulling in six balls for 129 yards (a 21.5 per-catch average) and two touchdowns.
Matt Braun and Bobby Rammel also had TD receptions for the Indians, who took a 28-7 lead into the half before being outscored 14-7 in the third and fourth quarters.
Braun paced the FRHS rushing attack with 67 yards on 17 carries, while Frank Thien had 47 yards on 12 attempts and one rushing touchdown.
Thien's TD at 6:04 got the scoring parade underway for the Fort, while touchdown passes of 15 and 27 yards from Kahlig to Metzger and Braun, respectively, at 9:15 and 5:36 of the second period.
New Bremen's Bryce Bergman answered a little more than a minute later with a 36-yard TD run, but the Indians responded with a drive capped off by a 16 yard scoring pass to Metzger from Kahlig with a little more than minute left before halftime and a 28-7 lead.
That lead was trimmed to 28-13 on a 56 yard TD run by New Bremen's Bergman at 10:08 of the third quarter, but the Indians answered with a Kahlig-to-Rammel 16 yard TD pass at 5:56 of the third quarter.
Bergman, who scored all three touchdowns for the Cardinals, racked up 130 yards on just 12 carries.
The Indians had 377 yards in total offense Friday to 292 for New Bremen.[[In-content Ad]]
