Indians romp to sectional championship (02/26/05)
FRHS boys basketball
COLDWATER, Ohio — Out-hustled.
Out-rebounded.
Out-shot.
And out-classed.
That was the final verdict in a whomping Fort Recovery sectional championship victory over New Bremen Friday night that wasn’t as close as the final score of 73-62 would appear.
The Indians played nearly flawless basketball in the first half, hitting an astonishing 68.4 percent of their shots while holding their opponents to less than 23 percent. Controlling the boards at the same time, the Indians had the Cardinals reeling by the time the opening minutes had ticked off the clock.
When the first quarter buzzer sounded, the shell-shocked New Bremen squad found itself on the wrong end of a 26-6 score. And things didn’t get much better in the second. At the half it was Fort Recovery 39, New Bremen 17.
The Cardinals tried to fight their way back into the game and actually outscored the Indians 19-12 in the third period and 26-22 in the fourth. But it was far too little far too late.
New Bremen improved its field goal shooting in the second half, bringing it up to 48.3 percent. But the hot-handed Indians continued to hit better than 60 percent of their shots.
For the game, Fort Recovery shot 65.6 percent, a figure any coach would happily take to the bank. The Indians hit 40 percent of their 3-point attempts and 63 percent of their free throws.
Four Fort Recovery players were in double digits when it came to scoring. Sean Kahlig led the Indians with 20, hitting 4 of 6 from the field and 12 of 16 from the free throw line.
Travis VanSkyock had 16 points, hitting 5 of 8 from the field and 6 of 7 free throws. Both Greg Faller and Dusty Tobe had 14 points. Faller was flawless from the field, hitting 5 of 5, including 2 from 3-point range.
Kahlig and VanSkyock each had 6 rebounds for the Indians.
New Bremen’s offense, which struggled mightily to get on track in the first half, saw 11 point performances from Scott Steineman, Curt Eilerman, and Troy Lammers.
The Indians now advance to Wapakoneta’s district tournament on Tuesday, March 1. Fort Recovery will play in the second game that night.
Friday’s bracket one championship saw St. Henry edge Coldwater in overtime.
