Indians smack No. 2 (01/12/08)
FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY - Bam!
That was the sound of No. 2-ranked St. Henry in Ohio's Division III getting knocked off its perch Friday night.
The force on the other end of that wallop was the Fort Recovery Indians, who handled St. Henry 51-43 Friday at Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Tough first-half defense that held St. Henry to 19 percent field-goal shooting from the field and a shoot-the-lights-out second half for the Indian offense, hitting 48 percent from the field, made all the difference.
The first quarter was all defense and scrap as the two teams sized one another up to the tune of 4-2 with the Indians on top. But in the second period, Fort Recovery's offense kicked in.
The Indians outscored St. Henry 14-9 in the second stanza, scoring 10 of those points in the paint and four on second chances. At the half, Fort Recovery was up 18-11. The lead extended in the third, when the Indians outscored the visitors 14-10.
By the fourth quarter, when St. Henry attempted a comeback and outscored the Indians 22-19, the lead was insurmountable, giving Fort Recovery the victory.
Greg Kahlig led Fort Recovery in scoring, hitting 5-of-12 from the field and 6-of-10 from the free-throw line for 16 points. Bobby Rammel followed with 6-of 10-from the field for 14. Clint Tobe scored 10 points.
Rammel and Tobe each had a 3-pointer, the only ones for the Indians Friday night.
The win brings the Indains to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
In the JV contest it was St. Henry 56, Fort Recovery 27.
