Indians take down No. 1 Marion Local (10/06/06)

FORT RECOVERY - So much for struggling against state-ranked teams.
After dropping their first five matches against top-10 foes this year, the Fort Recovery Indians won two of three Saturday at the Crestview Invitational. Thursday night, the Tribe volleyball team showed why it believes it can be playing in Dayton this November.
Fort Recovery dominated the opening game and the finishing fourth, defeating the Division IV No. 1 Marion Local Flyers 25-14, 25-23, 14-25, 25-15 to improve to 4-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.
In the past six days the Indians have beaten the first- and second-ranked teams in Division IV. Marion Local's only other losses this year came against Division III No. 1 Anna and No. 2 Versailles.
Tiff Gaerke paced the big win for Fort Recovery (13-6) with 23 of its 49 kills. She also had 13 digs, eight points three blocks and an ace.
Vicki Roessner led the Tribe defense with 14 digs, and also posted a team-high 12 points. Lauren Wenning finished with 12 kills and four blocks, Abby Niekamp had 39 assists. Rachel Stahl scored eight points, and Brittany Brackman finished with seven points.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery couldn't sustain the momentum from its second game in a 28-26, 21-25, 25-18 loss to the Flyers.
Kelsey Wuebker had team highs of 15 assists and 11 points in the defeat to go along with 16 digs and eight kills. Anne Koesters had nine points, eight kills and four blocks.
Nicole Pottkotter had 15 kills and 11 assists, Heather Schmackers finished with 18 digs and LeAnne Tobin totaled 17 digs.
Freshman
ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Indians dropped back-to-back matches for the first time all season with a 25-19, 25-14 loss to the St. Henry Redskins. Fort Recovery also lost to Coldwater Tuesday.
Chelsey Leuthold had six digs, five kills and four points, all team highs, for the Tribe (10-4). Emily May added four points, four kills and three digs.
Josie Guggenbiller finished with nine assists, Carly Staugler had six assists and Lauren Staugler added two blocks.
Junior high
COLDWATER, Ohio - Fort Recovery's seventh grade team pulled to within a game of .500 with a 25-14, 25-17 win over the Coldwater Cavaliers. The Indians are now 5-6 on the year.
The Tribe eighth graders slipped to 4-7 with a 25-17, 18-25, 25-11 loss to Coldwater.[[In-content Ad]]
