MINSTER, Ohio - Finishing third and fourth in two four-team races might not seem like such a good day. Then again, it all depends on the competition.
Battling some of the top cross country teams in the state, Fort Recovery High School's girls cross country team placed two runners in the top six for a third-place finish at Tuesday's Minster Quad.
The Indians scored 70 points to place third behind 2006 state runner up Minster (23) and state-qualifier Coldwater (50). St. Henry was last with 106.
The day marked another learning experience for the all-freshman Tribe boys, who finished last behind Minster (33), St. Henry (45) and Coldwater (53).
"It's not easy running two days after a big invitational down at Eaton. It's really hard to go out there and run your best. I think that was a struggle for the kids," said FRHS coach Jason Grieshop. "A lot of them were a little disappointed they didn't run as well as they did Saturday. ... There's no break to get your legs back.
"Even though we didn't have our best times, we still competed pretty well tonight. Kids were out there battling. They weren't far off their best times."
Girls team veterans Mindy Vogel, a senior and 2006 state qualifier, and junior Tina Roessner stood up against the top competition. Vogel ran out to the front of the pack, joining a trio of Minster runners and Coldwater's Larissa Kahn.
While the Minster group pulled away at Four Seasons Recreational Park, Vogel was a solid fourth at the mid-point of the race with Roessner close behind her in fifth. Vogel stayed strong to finish in fourth place with a time of 20-minutes, 40 seconds - 39 behind winner Lei Bornhorst of the host Wildcats.
Roessner was about 20 meters ahead of Kahn heading into the final 400, but Coldwater's leader caught her on the home stretch. Kahn finished fifth in 20:49, with Roessner sixth at 20:53.
"I thought Tina Roessner ran a great race except for the last 100 meters or so," said Grieshop. "She competed great.
"She was in front of all the people she wanted to be in front of today. She just needs to finish it."
Abby Huelskamp and Sam Bihn, a freshman and senior respectively, came in back-to-back for the Indians in 26th and 27th. Huelskamp finished in 23:05, and Bihn was one second behind her.
Amber Heitkamp was fifth for Fort Recovery to finish off the team score as she took 34th in 23:34.
Three other Tribe runners also broke the 25-minute mark with Abby Sudhoff 35th in 23:50, Casey Backs 39th at 24:35 and Alexis Sutter 40th with a time of 24:39.
"We just want kids running faster," said Grieshop of the pack of girls finishing behind his top two. "And lately they have been. That's a great positive for us."
Fighting against Minster, St. Henry and Coldwater proved a difficult task for the Indian boys who were well back in the back in the first 400 meters.
Ryan Heitkamp and Caleb Heitkamp fought back from their starts in the 30s, with Ryan scoring the top Fort Recovery finish in 19th at 19:18. Caleb followed in 22nd as he crossed the line in 19:48.
Alan Vogel finished in 20:44 for 30th place, Zach Guggenbiller was 42nd in 23:36 and Aaron Will finished 43rd in 24:12.
"It doesn't help going up against three of the best teams in the region," said Grieshop. "Today was another big growing experience for a lot of these freshman boys. They're learning each week what it takes to compete on the high school level. A lot of them are running well at times ... but I think all of them need to work on finding a way to run a complete race. They're making positive steps."
Also running for the Tribe girls were Alison Tobe (49th - 26:24), Hilary Pottkotter (51st - 26:41), Claire Wendel (54th - 27:25) and Tami Link (60th - 30:24).
Middle school
Fort Recovery's boys team finished second to Coldwater, 21-36, as neither Minster nor St. Henry had enough runners for a team score. The Tribe girls were third with 77 points behind Minster (24) and Coldwater (38) as St. Henry did not have enough runners.
Nathan Fullenkamp turned in the top overall finish for the Indians, taking fourth in 12:24. He was 33 seconds off the winning pace.
Mathias Koesters finished right behind Fullenkamp in fourth at 12:44. Derek Rammel placed 10th in 13:44, Adam Pohl was 12th at 13:59 and Calvin Kaiser finished 13th with a time of 14:22.
Nicole Heitkamp topped the Fort Recovery girls in 13th at 14:31, and Christen Wendel's time of 14:49 was good for 16th place. Joining them were Samantha Tobe (20th - 15:04), Mariah Koester (25th - 15:47) and Brenda Link (36th - 17:56).[[In-content Ad]]
