Indians top SA for 4th victory in a row (01/04/06)

FORT RECOVERY — After losing their conference opener, the Indians have picked up plenty of momentum in preparation for game two.

Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team fell to Coldwater in its first Midwest Athletic Conference game Dec. 16, but has won the next four games as it returns to MAC action Thursday at Minster. The latest victory came with dominant first and third quarters Tuesday night for a 66-24 trouncing of the South Adams Starfires.

Holly Stein had another big game for the Indians (7-1), who blasted South Adams 24-7 in the opening period and 22-3 in the third. She finished with a game-high 19 points, going 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point land.

She also had nine rebounds and four steals.

Sara Fortkamp was right behind her with 17 points as she made seven of her 10 field goal attempts. She also had four steals.

Fort Recovery, which held an opponent to 25 points or fewer for the third time this season and scored 65 or more for the third time as well, shot 52 percent in the second half. South Adams made just 2-of-17 field goals (12 percent) after the intermission.

The Indians also dominated the glass by a 44-16 margin.

Joining Stein and Fortkamp in double figures was Tiffany Gaerke with 10 points. She added eight rebounds and three blocks.

Abby Niekamp returned from an injury to grab a team-high 10 rebounds and dish out four assists.

South Adams, which fell to 1-9 with its sixth straight defeat, was led by 10 points, four steals and three rebounds from Kayla Coblentz. Holly Kaup scored five points.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery rolled in the first half on the way to a 36-20 victory over the Starfires.

The Indians were up by eight after the first period and pushed the lead to 22-7 at the half. They held South Adams to 13 percent shooting (2-of-15) in the first half and 23 percent for the game.

Jill Pottkotter scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Fort Recovery. Lauren Wenning had seven points, eight boards and four steals, and Anne Koesters totaled six points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Ashton Morgan finished with seven points and five steals for South Adams. Jodie Muhlenkamp scored five points.[[In-content Ad]]
