INDOT to pay higher costs
Portland Board of Works
The Indiana Department of Transportation will pay its share of an extra $800,000 in costs incurred for the nearly $6 million Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project in Portland.
Members of the Portland Board of Works voted this morning to sign an agreement with INDOT confirming that the state will pay 80 percent of the extra $800,000 (about $620,000) added to the project due to several change orders and unexpected delays. The city's share will be $160,000.
Previously, city officials had only received verbal confirmation that INDOT would pay the 80 percent of the additions.
The final cost of the street reconstruction and water separation project is $5,966,650, with INDOT paying 80 percent of that total.
"This has kind of been a work in progress for us," Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, told board members. City officials have been negotiating with INDOT for several months on the agreement.
Hosier said after this morning's meeting that the project, which has been in the works for several years, is nearly wrapped up and a date for a dedication ceremony will be announced soon.
Board member Bob McCreery suggested that several streetlights on utility poles located along the west side of Wayne Street be removed. He said the street has plenty of lighting since new streetlights were installed along the east side of the street as part of the Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project. Hosier said he will check into the matter and address the issue at the next board meeting.
In other business, board members opened annual bids for petroleum products, materials and services and for materials for streets and alleys.
The city received bids in the following categories:
•Asphalt - Meshberger Brothers Stone Corporation/Lica Construction.
•Sand and gravel - A. Landon Excavating, Ernst Concrete and Berne Ready Mix
•Oil - AgBest and G&G Oi.
•Gasoline/diesel - Fleet Sales (Village Pantry) and Murphy Oil.
Board members voted to take the bids under advisement and to have city clerk-treasurer Randy Geesaman review the bids. Board members are expected to vote on the bids at the next meeting, which is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 10 a.m.
Also today, Geesaman informed the board that wastewater treatment plant employee Russell White is on Family Medical Leave. He is expected to return to work on Feb. 17.[[In-content Ad]]
