Instant classic?

New activities scheduled for fair display

Think of it as a fair within a fair.
That’s what the Classics area of the Jay County Fair has evolved into.
Originally a single tent located east of the 4-H poultry barn, the Classics area has grown over the past several years to include a variety of displays, activities, demonstrations, and — of course — free homemade ice cream.
“It’s a lot of work, but we have a good time,” said Bob Lyons, a sparkplug for that part of the fair’s activities.
This year’s Classics agenda includes a stained glass demonstration by Steve Zielinski, the painting of a barn quilt by Ginger Loy, chainsaw art, euchre and checkers games, and exhibits by the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association, the Jay County Historical Society, the Museum of the Soldier, and the Vintage Motor Bike Club.
There will also be kettle corn daily, and at 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday of fair week there will be free homemade ice cream.
“Fifteen gallons, as long as it lasts,” said Lyons.

New this year, he said, will be a zip line that the group hopes to have stretch from a point near the FFA ring-the-bell attraction to another point 150 feet to the east.
Also new to the Classics area this year will be a display of a recreation of an oil well pumping mechanism. That mechanism, put together by Jay County resident Dewayne Boggs, was first displayed at last year’s Tri-State show.
That will tie in with the historical society’s display. “This year we’re doing a thing on the gas boom,” said historical society member Dave Frasher. The exhibit will include a replica of a 19th century well digging machine.
To support all these activities, the Classics area will hold a consignment auction at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Among the items to be sold will be pies from the Jay County Fair pie-baking contest.
That contest will be judged at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Also on the auction list will be the barn quilt painted during fair week.
“Anyone who wants to donate (to the auction) can get a hold of me at Strohl’s,” said Deb Gillespie, who is working with Aaron Loy to head up the consignment sale. There will be a 5 percent consignment fee which will go to support the Classics area in the future.
“What we try to do is be self-sufficient,” said Lyons.[[In-content Ad]]
