InterUrban still popular (3/1/04)
A three-county transportation system continues to grow in popularity, an official from the not-for-profit running The New InterUrban told Jay County Commissioners this morning.
Judy Ritter, an official from LifeStream Services Inc., told Commissioners Gary Theurer and Milo Miller Jr. that the service, which provides transportation in Jay, Randolph and Delaware counties, is running smoothly. Commissioner Mike Leonhard was not at this morning’s meeting.
Ritter also said that LifeStream had tried unsuccessfully for a $4,000 grant from The Portland Foundation to fund a part-time position that would take children to school in the morning.
The New InterUrban is currently servicing several families in Portland who use the service’s vans for school transportation because of complications with work schedules or other factors.
Ritter said the Jay School Corporation is referring parents to LifeStream.
Theurer and Miller said they were not pleased that more money — either from government subsidies or individuals — was being used to fund transportation that should be provided by schools.
“We’re already paying property taxes to fund the schools and transportation,” Theurer said.[[In-content Ad]]
