Is conflict all about personalities

Editorial

So, in the end, is this just about personalities?
Is that what the months-long dispute between former airport manager Dave Miller and Mayor Bruce Hosier ultimately boils down to?
That’s the conclusion we keep coming back to, since the financial arguments for chasing Miller out of Portland Municipal Airport simply don’t hold water.
And if that conclusion is accurate, what does it say about Portland and Jay County’s reputation as a business-friendly community?
How can we be accurately described as business-friendly when city government is intent upon sending Miller’s operation elsewhere?
When pressed on this matter over the months, both Mayor Hosier and aviation board president Glynn Barber have hinted that there are things the public doesn’t know about Miller’s work at the airport and his dealings with the aviation board. They’ve implied that this other stuff is what has shaped their actions.
But it’s increasingly likely that the “other stuff” is simply that the parties involved don’t like or trust each other very much.
Miller may have dissed the mayor when he tangled with the city’s financial consultant last year, and the relationship between Barber and Miller has to be complicated by Barber’s crashing of a Miller-owned plane.
If that’s ultimately what’s at the bottom of this fracas, it’s profoundly disappointing.
And at this point, that’s the only conclusion left. — J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
