ISTEP results showing progress (12/06/2008)

By By JACK RONALD-

Jay Schools superintendent Tim Long said Friday district-wide ISTEP scores this fall demonstrate that goals are continuing to be met.

"Overall, I was pleased," said Long. "We always think we can improve and our goal will always be improvement."

The Jay School Board set a goal for this year of improving the number of students passing ISTEP by three percent, and Long said test results show that goal was met in language arts and exceeded in mathematics on an aggregate basis for the district.

The board and administration had also targeted improving scores for special needs students and those in the free and reduced lunch program.

"A review of district data shows impressive gains in the percentage of special education students passing ISTEP, with every grade showing gains in the number of students passing English/language arts and math except English/language arts in grade 7," said assistant superintendent Wood Barwick in a prepared statement.

Barwick also reported gains in grades 4, 5, and 6 for students in the free and reduced lunch program.

Long also noted that the "gender gap" in ISTEP scores showed some signs of narrowing, with male students performing better in language arts at four of six grade levels when compared to a year earlier. "So, we're happy with that," he added.

"Our teachers worked extremely hard on our goals this year," said Long.

On a statewide basis, 72.1 percent of Indiana students passed the English/language arts portion of the test.

In Jay County, 72.7 percent passed, up from 71.4 percent in 2007.

On a statewide basis, 74.7 percent of Indiana students passed the math section of the test. In Jay County, 79.6 percent passed, up from 77.2 percent in 2007.

On a statewide basis, an average of 64.8 percent of students passed both the language arts and math portions of ISTEP.

Locally, some schools performed vastly better than the state average while some were below average in terms of the percentage of students passing both portions.

Here's a school by school breakdown on the percentage of students passing both sections of ISTEP: Bloomfield 84.4 percent, Pennville 81.8 percent, East Elementary 80.8 percent, General Shanks 73.4 percent, East Jay Middle School 61 percent, Redkey 69.3 percent, Westlawn 68.2 percent, Judge Haynes 65.1 percent, West Jay Middle School 61 percent, Jay County High School 55.2 percent.[[In-content Ad]]
