It's time for action

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

I have no doubt that this letter will never be printed in the paper, but I wanted to get a few things out.

How can a “woman” take a mentally challenged man to court over 10 times for invasion of privacy, get a restraining order each time, and no sooner than the man is out of court, she’s calling and chasing him down to come to her house?

He has spent about two years total in jail for violating the restraining orders, even though she is the one who broke the restraining order by calling and tracking him down.

I have been to court with him every time, and not once has she been ordered to stay away from him. Why?

Could it be that because of financial factors he was forced to be represented by a court-appointed attorney that doesn’t care?

I’m not an attorney, but I have enough common sense to know that a restraining order should have been put on her also, or have her ordered to stay away.

“He” is on SSI and I am his payee. He has signed papers saying it’s okay for his lawyer to tell me anything, but his attorney won’t even take my calls. I’ve tried to get his attorney to bring in a psychologist in the past.

That was ignored.

I’m not saying he should not be punished. What he needs is mental help, not prison. But he can’t get help in jail, especially when she is allowed to come up and visit him, leave him money, tell him to call her on the calling card she brings him and tell him when he gets out that they will live happily ever after.

These are all on record at the jail. Why didn’t his attorney take these records to court?

If this had happened once or twice, I could let it go, but over 10 times with the same woman?

You are probably saying to yourself, “Why doesn’t he just stay away from her?” I have begged him to. But, like I said before, we are talking about someone who doesn’t understand, who is mentally challenged.

All he understands is that her word is God to him. She tells him that she won’t have him put in jail this time if he comes down to her house, and he believes her.

This is a game to her. A sick game at that. We can also ask her the same thing. Why don’t you just stay away from him? And after 10 times why hasn’t she been ordered to stay away from him.

The ironic part of this is the fact that I’ve not once mentioned any names in this letter, but you can ask anyone in Dunkirk who I am referring to and they can tell you their names. They will also tell you he doesn’t deserve this; she should be put in jail, not him.

It’s time for something to be done. The court-appointed attorney needs to do his job or step down. Doesn’t everyone deserve to be represented by an attorney to the best of his ability? Or is it a matter of money?

Like I said at the beginning, this will never see print, but at least I tried.

Thank you for your time.
