It's time for class of 2008 (03/05/08)

Jay County High School seniors plan to leave their mark.
Members of the class of 2008 are raising funds to purchase a clock for the school. Once purchased, the industrial-strength timekeeper will stand outside of the north entrance of the school.
"We thought it would be something that would make the school more attractive as a whole," said senior class vice president Lee Haggenjos. "There's no way to tell time when (you) come into school." He said many of the clocks in the hallways were removed during recent construction.
The clock costs $8,000. So far, members of the senior class have raised about half that amount through fundraisers and donations. They are hoping the community will chip in the rest.
Haggenjos said letters asking for donations have been sent to business and several service organizations in the community. The class is also encouraging anyone affiliated with the school to make a donation.
Those who donate to the cause will be recognized on a sign at the north entrance of the school.
The clock will look similar to the one near The Portland Foundation office on East Main Street, Portland. Haggenjos said it will be black or green and "JCHS class of 2008" will be at the top of the clock.
"We chose this design because it was the most cost efficient ... and industrial strength," so it should last a long time, he said. The clock will be equipped with satellite and GPS to make sure the time is always right, he added.
Once the clock is ordered, it will take about a month to come in. Haggenjos said he and his classmates hope to have the clock installed before graduation.
Haggenjos said he and his classmates decided that donating a clock would be a good way to give back to the school and the community.
All checks should be made payable to Jay County High School Class of 2008, in care of Linda Gray, treasurer. Donations can be sent to Jay County High School, 2072 West Ind. 67, Portland, IN, 47371.[[In-content Ad]]
