It's time to dance in Dunkirk

Roger Hammond says he was told not to expect any dancing at his band’s first performance at Dunkirk’s Webster- Depot Park last year.
He knew better.
“They were surprised that all the people came to dance,” said Hammond, whose band, Reminisce, will return to Webster-Depot at 7 p.m. Aug. 3.
“I think this year it’ll be twice as good,” Hammond added. “We liked the people. It was a very nice setting. … It’s like a big neighborhood, family get-together.”
Hammond (lead vocals and guitar) and his band mates Phil Dale (lead guitar and vocals), Nola Nottingham (keyboards and vocals), Jeremy Hammond (bass guitar and vocals) and Mike Kerrigan (percussion) play music that originated from 1955 through 1967. They play only top-five hits in an effort to make sure everyone will know their songs.
And they’ll take requests from that time period, but “it must be a song that everyone can dance to.”
“We chose dance music from the very beginning, because it draws the crowd into it,” said Roger Hammond. “Instead of us trying to do a show in front of everyone, it pulls everyone into it.”

Hammond, a barber by day, brought the group together five years ago, pulling who he felt were some of the best musicians in the area. All five members live in Muncie.
“Everybody has played a whole lot,” Hammond said. “To get to this point, you have to play a lot. We really specialize in harmonies.”
Reminisce has been busy this summer, with its most recent gig at a Muncie Central/Muncie Southside class reunion. They’ve also played the Jay County Fair and Yorktown Fourth of July celebration, and are slated to be on stage at Selma Blue Bird Days on Aug. 22.
Their CDs have included songs such as “Love Potion #9”, “Mustang Sally” and “Rock Around the  Clock”.
Those tunes and similarly upbeat 1950s and ’60s music are slated for the concert at Webster-Depot Park.
And Hammond has some advice for those who attend: “Bring a lawn chair and some good, soft dancing shoes,” he said.[[In-content Ad]]
