Tyler Rigby and the Red Wolves have taken the first step toward their goal.
The 2006 Jay County High School graduate scored 13 points Saturday in the Indiana University – East men’s basketball team’s 78-69 victory over Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Cincinnati Christian.
“Our goal is to get to the national tournament, especially for me and (fellow senior) Brent Burris,” said Rigby, who helped lead JCHS to the Class 3A state finals in 2006, after the game. “We need to get there.”
A KIAC title would earn the Red Wolves, who are now ranked 20th in NAIA Division II, an automatic berth in the national tournament.
Rigby spent much of the first half against Cincinnati Christian on the bench because of foul trouble, but still tallied 13 points in the victory. He currently ranks 12th in the country in scoring at 22.8 points per game.
The senior also grabbed six rebounds, second on the team, and had three assists and three steals.
For the season, Rigby is averaging 6.5 rebounds per game and has 35 3-pointers, 25 assists, 16 steals and five blocks.
Tiff Gaerke

Had her career come to an end Saturday when the No. 14 University of Dayton volleyball team lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Ohio State.
Gaerke finished second on the team with 11 digs in the Flyers’ three-game opening-round victory over Butler. She also had one assist and one ace.
The senior totaled four digs and three aces in the match against Ohio State (24-11), in which UD dropped the first two games. They rallied to force the match to five games, but lost 25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 24-26, 16-14.
Gaerke finished the season with 65 digs, 34 kills, nine assists, eight blocks and eight aces for the Flyers, who went 28-4.

Helped the University of Findlay men’s basketball team stay unbeaten Tuesday as it defeated Illinois-Springfield 66-57.
Kahlig tallied six points off the bench for the NCAA Division II No. 2 Oilers, who improved to 7-0. He also had four rebounds and one block in just 13 minutes.
He totaled three rebounds, two points and two assists in Findlay’s 84-63 Dec. 2 over Northwood.
Cori Vormohr
Jay County – 2009
Scored points in four events Friday and Saturday as the Ball State University women’s swim team placed third out of 12 teams at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
Vormohr turned in her best individual effort with a time of 1 minute, 7.66 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke for a 13th-place finish. She was also 16th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.11.
The sophomore teamed with freshmen Mallory Miles, Betsy Bowen and Haley Richter to place seventh in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.26. She also joined teammates Maria Gramelspacher, Nikki Saulters and Jackie Iglesias for a 12th-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:57.92.
Joanna Snyder

Connected on two of her three field-goal attempts Saturday in the Ohio Northern University women’s basketball team’s 64-45 win over Muskingum.
Snyder finished with four points for the Polar Bears (4-1, 1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference). She also grabbed six rebounds while adding two assists and two steals.

Was the No. 2 scorer for the Huntington University women’s basketball team Wednesday as it took on Indiana University – South Bend.
Speed came off the bench to score eight points for the Foresters, who fell to 7-3 with a 51-38 defeat. She also had two assists and a rebound.
The freshman totaled five points, two steals and a rebound Saturday in Huntington’s 69-63 victory over Taylor.
For the season, Speed is averaging 4.9 points per game and has 24 rebounds, 17 assists and 10 steals.[[In-content Ad]]
