Jail may get warm
Air conditioning to be taken down for construction
It may be a bit hot for inmates and employees of the Jay County Jail as construction continues to wind down this summer.
Sheriff Ray Newton told the Jay County Building Corporation board that only one air conditioning unit is currently operational as work crews continue installing ductwork and setting up new units. Newton said getting the air repaired is a top priority to create more pleasant conditions inside the existing jail as temperatures continue to heat up.
"They're trying to find other ways to air condition the place," he said. "We're doing what we can to try to solve the problem."
Two of the jail's four units were taken offline to complete improvements and one is malfunctioning.
Newton otherwise reported that work is continuing to move along smoothly and that crews are doing interior painting and installing ceiling tiles. He also predicted that electrical wiring work should begin soon and exterior block work is nearly complete.
"Hopefully by next month we'll have a good idea of when we'll be moving in," he said.
In other business, the board reviewed its monthly claims and discussed a $16,009.51 claim to telecommunications provider CenturyLink.
Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz, who is providing construction oversight, wasn't at Thursday's meeting to explain the charge, but board members agree its likely from when underground utility lines needed to be moved in an alley east of the site.
Newton said he thinks that work was completed at the end of 2009.
"I assume we probably just got the bill," said board member Mark Tatman.
The board approved paying the monthly claims, totaling $674,259.83.[[In-content Ad]]
