Jail open house scheduled (09/26/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

On Saturday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 11, the Jay County Security Center will be open to the public from noon to 3 p.m.

This event is intended to provide an opportunity for the public to get a firsthand look at the facility, and the ability to make an informed decision regarding the building expansion referendum Nov. 4.

The jail is in good structural condition, with some repairs needed to exterior walls and roof.

By touring the jail, the public will be able to see space currently available for day-to-day operations in the administrative area, 911 center and kitchen. The tour will also include the secured inmate housing portion of the facility. The secured area is equipped with antiquated mechanicals, and also suffers from lack of space for staff, storage and inmates.

Members of law enforcement, jail and 911 staff will be on hand to answer questions you may have.

Please plan to attend this important event.

Great help

To the editor:

Judan Judo would like to thank our supporters for another great year.

Children and adults in our program were given the opportunity to host the Indiana State Championships, travel to six regional events, and finish the summer by competing in Florida.

In Florida they fought in the Junior U.S. Open International Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, and a week later in Disney World in the Junior Olympic Nationals.

Kelsi Bostic was also invited to compete in Argentina in the Junior Pan-American Championships in April and the Junior World Trials in August in Spokane, Wash. Judan Judo is a not-for-profit organization located in Portland since 1978.

It provides a year-round program where all participants can be champions.

We would like to thank the community for its support and the following companies and individuals for help and donations: Tyson Foods, Jay School Corporation, July Fourth Committee, Alpine Water, Jay County Solid Waste District, Viola Cline, Brad Zorn, and the many parents who have helped donate supplies and help.

Mark Mondays

To the editor:

When reading my daily devotional, I learned that the people in Thailand wear yellow each Monday to show their respect and admiration for their King, Bhumibal, who led them for 60 years.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could show our love for the King who gave his life for us 2,000 years ago? Each Monday morning, we could vow to show that love to our fellow man - at work, at play, at school, when we shop, when we drive, when we eat out, etc. At the end of the day or at the evening meal, we could share the ways that this day was different by practicing love for others.

Let's mark each Monday of our October calendar as a reminder (with an "L" or a heart). It's certainly worth a try. Who knows? Showing love and respect for others may become a habit that we can't and don't want to break.

Correction

To the editor:

I was reading the letter about offshore drilling I sent to you which was published in Tuesday's edition of The Commercial Review.

I was horrified to read that I had made an error of printing Nancy Pelosi's name next to John McCain's name. I thought I had read the article and all was well.

But I meant to state we need to elect John McCain and his running mate of Sarah Palin. I am so sorry that I did not catch that error while proofreading my letter.

In view of the crisis on Wall Street which has occurred recently, it is all the more important we elect the McCain-Palin ticket.

Their ticket has the most experience - far above the Democratic ticket of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Joe Biden.

Sarah does have more experience than Obama. And McCain's fierce, strong, excellent views far exceed that of the Democratic ticket.

Thank you for allowing me to correct that error.
