PARKER CITY — Having one player who can score 20 points is enough to make a team dangerous. Three of them on the same squad is nearly impossible to stop.
Monroe Central decided to focus on the inside in an effort to slow down Scott Schwieterman and his 20.5 point per game average. When they did, Brock McFarland responded with a season-high 21 points.
McFarland led another efficient offensive effort for the Patriots, who shot 66 percent and had 21 assists on 25 made field goals, as they pulled away for a 70-42 victory over the host Golden Bears.
“Brock played outstanding,” said Teagle, who also got 14 points from senior guard Kegan Comer. “We wanted to go inside, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve got to score inside. We went inside, they were collapsing … and Scott was kicking out of it and we were getting other opportunities. That’s what an experienced team does.”
That experience showed in the second half.
After being unhappy about giving up five first-half 3-pointers, Jay County (3-0) shut down the Golden Bears in the first 10 minutes of the second. Leading by 10 early in the third quarter, the Patriots allowed just one hoop during the next eight minutes as they put together a 22-2 run to pull away.
“That stretch at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter I think we scored on seven or eight possessions right in a row and they were assisted baskets around the rim,” said Teagle. “That allows you to pull away … I was pretty proud of how we executed at that point.”
The Patriots’ passing, which included six assists each from McFarland and Comer, led to a 25-of-38 shooting effort. They shot 8-of-15 (53 percent) from 3-point range and were 12-of-14 at the foul line.
McFarland shot 7-of-9 for his game-high total and also grabbed seven rebounds.
Jay County owned the glass, out-rebounding the Golden Bears 27-7. Schwieterman followed McFarland with six boards.
“A lot of times we had all five guys blocked out and we still couldn’t get the rebound,” said first-year Monroe Central coach Lucas Zartman, who played under Teagle at Caston. “It wasn’t from a lack of effort. Our guys battled. … It was just tough because of their size.”
While his classmates led the way in scoring, Darren Bogenschutz provided some highlights off the bench.
He entered late in the third quarter and buried a 3-pointer with two seconds left off of an assist from Comer. He proceeded to hit three more hoops, including another 3-pointer, in the fourth quarter as he finished 4-for-4 and made a pair of free throws for a career-high 12 points.
“Bogey’s a beast,” said McFarland. “That was awesome. When he hit that first one I got so pumped up. I about lost my voice. I was jumping up and down and screaming.”
Bogenschutz had told assistant coach John McGlothin before the game that he liked playing at Monroe Central, where remembered shooting well for the junior varsity team two seasons ago.

“(Hitting the first shot) built a little confidence and from there they just kept getting me the ball and I got easy baskets,” said Bogenschutz. “It felt great. It was all team play. They got me open and I hit my shots.”
Chase Bly kept the Golden Bears (1-2) in the game in the opening half as he shot 4-of-5 from long distance. He finished with 21 points.
Bracken Barga joined him in double figures with 12 points.
Jay County never trailed in the game, taking the lead for good on a hoop by Schwieterman in the first quarter. It led by seven at the end of the first period and at halftime before blowing open the game in the third quarter.
The Patriots have won their first three games by an average of 27.6 points.
“Coach Teagle does a great job,” said Zartman. “His teams stay disciplined for 32 minutes. They don’t break down. They stick to the game plan. …
“We got a little loose there early in the second half and we broke down offensively and defensively. That gave them the gap that they needed to break the game open, and they did.”

Junior varsity
Jay County solved its second-half problems, dominating the final 12 minutes for a 41-21 victory over the Golden Bears.
Zane Shreve and Kyle Selvey each scored 11 points for the Patriots (1-2), who shut out Monroe Central in the third quarter and outscored the home team 18-4 in the second half. Selvey scored nine of his points on three second-quarter 3-pointers, and Nick Clemens added seven points.
JCHS had given up second-half leads in losing each of its first two games.
Kaiser Phillips and Cody Woolf finished with seven points apiece for the Golden Bears.
