After suffering their worst loss in seven years in their season opener, the Patriots needed to rebuild some confidence in the first home game.
A 49-point win should do the trick.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team bounced back in a big way Friday, leading 20-0 after the opening period on the way to a 66-17 slaughter of the Muncie Southside Rebels.
“Everything that we had (worked on) up to the (Fort Wayne) South Side game, I felt like we lost,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg in reference to Tuesday’s 38-point loss to the Archers. “That just sucked the life right out of us.
“But then we bounced back Wednesday and practiced hard. The girls wanted to prove themselves. …
“(Tonight) we jumped out on (the Rebels) right away. … This is a game that we needed.”
The Patriots (1-1), who went scoreless in the first quarter against Fort Wayne South Side, held Muncie Southside without a point in the opening quarter Friday. On the defensive end, they forced 14 turnovers while limiting the Rebels to just three field-goal attempts.
Meanwhile, Jay County hit nine shots of its own in the opening period with Maria Murphy scoring seven of her nine points and Mariah Hornaday adding six.
Southside’s first hoop came on a Cortney Smith 3-point on its first possession of the second quarter, but the visiting squad never scoring back-to-back points while the Patriots had runs of 20, 10 and nine consecutive points.
JCHS, which beat the Rebels by 30 or more points for the fourth straight season, also finished with just 12 turnovers after giving the ball away 35 times in the season opener.
“We talked about … playing at our level for 32 minutes,” said Krieg. “For the most part we did tonight.
“I feel pretty good right now.”
Hornaday, who had a team-high eight points against the Archers, led the Patriots again Friday in their bounce-back effort. She scored 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed five rebounds, all in the first three quarters.
“She’s got great post moves. She can go left or right,” said Krieg. “She’s got good hands, and she’s going to finish around the basket. … Our guards did a great job of getting her the basketball.”
Erin Hunt scored on a drive to the basket early in the second quarter and then nailed three of her four 3-point attempts as she finished with 11 points and three assists. Freshman Katlin Petro totaled seven points, and Murphy grabbed five rebounds.
Jay County racked up 19 assists on 26 made field goals — seven players finished with two or more assists — and shot 49 percent from the field.
“Erin Hunt shot the ball really well tonight,” Krieg said. “I’ve been on Erin about not just being a shooting, but being a scorer. And on her first basket she took the ball to the hole, which is something Erin has to do. If you do that, it’s going to be hard to guard.”
“Murph gave us some good minutes inside tonight. … Petro stepped up, filled in a big gap with Danielle (Link) being out and gave us some great minutes.”
Link was injured in a collision less than five minutes into Tuesday’s game, suffering a broken right arm that is expected to sideline her until January. She also suffered a knee injury, the extent of which has not yet been determined.
The Patriots did get another injured player, Cara Garringer, back for Friday’s game. The senior, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 2009-10 season opener and did not play Tuesday, came off the bench and totaled four points, three assists and two rebounds.
Smith led the scoring for Southside, hitting four free throws to go along with her 3-pointer for seven points. Shelby Cumings added three points, and Caylynn Mayse grabbed 11 rebounds.

Jay County outscored the Rebels 14-2 in the second quarter to pull away en route to a 44-11 victory.
Katie Aker scored eight points to lead the Patriots, who also shut out Southside in the fourth quarter. Amber Huelskamp finished with six points, and Megan Sawyer and Abbi Dunlavy each chipped in five.
Da’Brielle Sloss scored all but two of the Rebels’ points.[[In-content Ad]]
