Jay County's Waters aids Manchester in shutout (03/19/05)

A Jay County graduate was involved in a big win on the diamond for his team, while a former South Adams Starfire had several big games only to have her team struggle.
Former Patriot Mitch Waters was a key part of a shutout as the Manchester baseball team improved to 6-2. Carrie Nichols of SAHS started her sophomore season with some big offense, but the St. Francis softball team still opened 1-10 at the Tucson Invitational.
Waters started at third base Wednesday and finished with four assists and one put-out as teammates Dan Sprunger and Eric Tealle combined for a six-hit shutout. He reached base once with a walk.
Nichols starred for the Cougars in a pair of games in Arizona. She knocked accounted for her team’s only runs with a two-run double in a 6-2 loss to Bethany March 12, and went 3-for-3 with a couple of RBIs in a 6-5 loss to Minot State Wednesday.
Baseball try-outs
Try-outs for the Jay County middle school baseball teams will be March 30, 31 and April 7 at Jay County High School.
The try-out sessions, which will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m., are for both the East Jay and West Jay teams. Players should report to the JCHS gym.

AAU places 2nd
Jay County’s fifth grade AAU boys basketball team finished second at the Northern Indiana Spring Shootout in Churubusco March 12.
The team made it to the championship game before falling to Fort Wayne Concordia 42-31. In February it also participated in the Kids Helping Kids Tournament, which generated $477 for the Children’s Hope and Hospitality House in Fort Wayne.[[In-content Ad]]
