Heading into the season, the Patriots set a goal of bringing home their school’s first sectional title in girls swimming. They’ll have a chance at another impressive goal as well.
The Jay County High School girls swim team scoring a 195-117 victory over the visiting Delta Eagles Tuesday, running its record to 7-2.
The Patriots are already just two wins short of what they accomplished all last season when they went 9-4. And the school record of 11 wins — the mark was set in 1976 and matched in 1991, ’92 and 2000 — is also within reach as the team has seven dual meets remaining.
“It’s nice to go into (Saturday’s Connersville Invitational) and be 7-2,” said Slavik after his team’s final dual meet of the 2010 portion of the season. “I was actually hoping to be 8-1 right now, but 7-2 is beyond what any of us could have expected at the end of last season. These girls are working extremely hard. … They’re hungry. … It’s a great first half of the season.”
Jay County’s boys fell  167-132 to the Eagles Tuesday to drop to 1-5 on the year.
“We got touched out way too many times. We lost three races by less than a tenth of a second,” said Patriot boys coach Barry Weaver. “Those are things where you just bear down and get to the wall.
“There were a lot of places were we did swim well. But overall, 167-132 is not what we were hoping for.”
Juniors Eme Miller and Mary Hudson and senior Charlotte Becot set the pace for the JCHS girls with two wins apiece while also contributing to a pair of relay victories.
Miller dominated the 200-yard freestyle, finishing seven seconds ahead of freshman teammate Caitlin Mark in 2 minutes, 12.5 seconds. She was also first in the 500 freestyle in 5:54.92.
Becot led a sweep of the 50 freestyle, winning ahead of teammates Elaine Hemmelgarn and Marissa Murrell by nearly three seconds in 26.68. She added a winning time of 1:08.27 in the 100 backstroke.
Hudson’s victories came with times of 59.25 in the 100 freestyle and 1:12.36 in the 100 breaststroke.
The trio also teamed with Brie McGhee to take the 200 medley relay in 2:01.5 and joined Mark for first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:04.69.
Neal Fennig earned the only victory for the boys team, which was competing for the third time in four days, as he posted a time of 1:01.73 in the 100 backstroke. He was also second in the 50 freestyle.
McGhee added a victory for the girls team in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.79, and was second to 2010 state qualifier Emilee Kirby in the 200 individual medley by less than a second.
Megan Taylor scored 172.65 points to finish second in diving.
Wiley Young placed second in the boys 100 and 200 freestyle events, Zach James was second in the 100 breaststroke and Alex Sutton was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle.[[In-content Ad]]
