Jay grads impressive vs. Wittenberg (02/21/2009)

Collegiate Check-up

Tyler Rigby and Dustin Overton made the most of a unique opportunity.

Their NAIA IU-East men's basketball team made a late addition to its schedule, playing NCAA Division III Wittenberg Monday. Rigby and Overton, both Jay County High School graduates, were the leading scorers for the Red Wolves, who cut an 18-point deficit to just seven late in the game before falling 80-69.

Rigby (2006) racked up a game-high 22 points against Wittenberg, which has won six NCAA Division III championships since 1990 and had seven straight 20-win seasons from 2001 through 2007. He hit three 3-pointers and made all of his five foul shots while adding four rebounds and four steals.

Overton (2004) played 20 minutes off the bench against the Tigers, hitting 5-of-9 from the field and scoring 12 points. He matched Rigby with four rebounds.

IU-East also clobbered Cincinnati Christian 93-59 Feb. 14 with both former Patriots scoring in double figures.

Rigby hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 16 points in just 24 minutes. He also had a rebound and two steals.

Overton was sizzling on the offensive end, burying 5-of-7 shots for 12 points. He shared the team high of seven rebounds while adding two assists, one block and one steal.

For the season, Rigby is averaging 16.8 points and Overton is shooting 53 percent from the field.
