Jay grads run in MCC meet (11/15/2008)

Collegiate Check-up

Alyssa Johnson led a trio of Jay County High School graduates who ran Nov. 8 at the Mid-Central Conference Championships hosted by Spring Arbor.

Johnson, a 2006 JCHS graduate, turned in the best finish as her Taylor University women's cross country team placed fifth in the nine-team field.

She posted a time of 19-minutes, 4.8 seconds, to pace the Trojans. That mark was good for eighth overall in the field of 121 runners.

Alyssa's sister, 2008 graduate Amanda Johnson, gave the former Patriots a second top-20 finish. Running for champion Indiana Wesleyan, she took 21st in 19:47.

Jill Roughia, a 2005 graduate of JCHS, finished 26th for Huntington University with a time of 20:06. She was the top runner for the Foresters, who placed eighth.

Tyler Rigby

Jay County - 2006

Led the Indiana University-East men's basketball team in scoring twice as it opened the season with four wins in its first five games.

Rigby had his best effort thus far Thursday when he racked up 26 points for the Red Wolves in an 83-67 victory over Wesley College. He shot 10-of-15 from the field and buried six 3-pointers to go along with a season-high five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

The sophomore scored 19 points in IU-East's season-opening win over Purdue-North Central, shooting 7-of-8 from the field including a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range. He racked up his total in less than 18 minutes of play and also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Rigby was also the top scorer for the Red Wolves with 16 points in a 91-48 destruction of Ohio State-Lima. He added four rebounds, one assist and one steal in that game, and totaled 19 points in the Red Wolves win over IU-Northwest.

For the season he is averaging 16.8 points, 5.2 rebounds,1.4 assists and one steal per game.

Tiff Gaerke

Fort Recovery - 2007

Helped the University of Dayton women's volleyball team lock down at least a second place in the Atlantic 10 West Division with a three-game victory over Xavier.

Gaerke had nine and nine kills Nov. 7 as her Flyers clobbered Xavier, which sits in third place in the division, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19. She also had one assist and one block in the win.

The Flyers (19-9, 10-1 A-10) will have a chance to pull even for the division lead when it plays host to first-place Saint Louis today.

Gaerke also had 16 kills, 12 digs, two blocks and one assist in Dayton's loss Nov. 8 to Wright State.

Joseph Vormohr

Jay County - 2006

Helped the Hanover College football team to its second win in its last three games Nov. 8 by a 42-19 score over Bluffton.

Vormohr got his second straight start at center, paving the way for a season-best rushing effort. The Panthers rushed for 232 yards, including 166 by junior Josh Juett.[[In-content Ad]]
