Jay tax bills on schedule (3/30/04)
Bills should arrive in mailboxes this week
While some counties across Indiana are still struggling to send out bills for taxes due last year, officials in Jay County planned to begin mailing 2004 property tax bills today.
Jay County treasurer Robin Alberson said Monday that she expected that bills for taxes on the more than 14,000 parcels of land in the county should be sent out today or Wednesday.
Alberson said that unlike the 2003 tax billing cycle, which was delayed due to a switch in assessment rules and collected in one installment in the fall, there were no significant problems or delays this year.
“My understanding was we were one of the first (counties in Indiana) to get our tax rates this year,” Alberson said.
Property taxes are payable in two installments, with the spring payment due Monday, May 10 and the fall payment due Wednesday, Nov. 10.
Those who have a drainage maintenance payment due must also pay that amount by May 10.
The treasurer’s office is open for payments in person Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Payments may also be made by mail to: Treasurer’s Office, 120 Court St., Portland, IN 47371.
Those wishing a mailed receipt should enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Payment of current taxes also will be accepted at Citizen’s First State Bank, Dunkirk, and MainSource Bank, Redkey, during regular banking hours.
Taxpayers who do not receive a bill or who have questions may call the treasurer’s office at (260) 726-7007.[[In-content Ad]]
