Jay zoning board organizes for year (01/20/06)
Jay County Board of Zoning Appeals
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
The Jay County Board of Zoning Appeals met for the first time in 2006 for an organizational meeting.
Dennis Rodgers was elected chairman of the board, and Carl Walker was named vice-chairman. Steve Fennig was named secretary, and Gayle Davenport was retained as recording secretary. The law firm of Hinkle, Racster, Lopez and Clamme was retained as the board’s legal counsel.
Additionally, members agreed to move the meetings to 7 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.
“We need to meet at a time that’s convenient for the petitioners,” Walker said. “After all, we meet for them.”
Bill Milligan, administrator/director of the Jay/Portland Building and Planning department gave a brief summary of the annual report his office recently prepared.
He noted that building permits issued for 2005 totaled 349 and total declared value of new construction was $24,227,218 including the new Wal-Mart SuperCenter.
Confined feeding operations totaled 11, up from five in 2004, and construction of new agricultural buildings was also up in 2005, he noted.
Rodgers acknowledged new board member, Steve Ritchie, who was unable to attend Thursday’s meeting.
Milligan also told the board that a special exception request from Paul Saunders and Charlene Peake, 4030 South 300 East, Portland, for a general store in an agricultural district, has seen no action since the May 19 request.
Milligan said while Portland has a one-year deadline on such a change request, the county does not have such a policy.[[In-content Ad]]
