Jays defeat Tribe
FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY - The chance remains that Fort Recovery could earn a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title. But an opportunity to all-but lock up the outright league crown fell apart in the second half Friday night.
The Division IV No. 5 Indian boys basketball team fell behind by as many as 16 in the second half, falling 62-49 to the St. John's Blue Jays.
Fort Recovery (16-2, 7-1 MAC), which has not won a league title since 1999, trailed by just two points midway through the second quarter. However, the Blue Jays (14-3, 7-0 MAC) extended to a five-point lead at halftime and then opened the second half on a 10-2 run.
The Indians pulled back to within single digits on three occasions, but fell behind by 16 late in the fourth quarter as they suffered their first loss since Jan. 30. The Tribe had won 10 in a row.
Scoring was a struggle for FRHS, which shot just 28 percent in the first half and 31 percent for the game. Greg Kahlig and Craig Tobe reached double figures with 18 and 13 points respectively, but combined to shoot just 10-of-35 from the field.
Kahlig missed all of his 10 3-point attempts as the Indians went 7-of-34 (21 percent) from long distance. Cody Fiely scored 16 points and shared the team-high of five rebounds with Kahlig.
Nate Webb led the St. John's attack with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Scott Recker had 17 points, and Justin Backus finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Fort Recovery will close out its conference schedule Friday at New Bremen (13-3). St. John's still faces games against New Bremen and Division III No. 9 Coldwater (13-5)
