FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY - In its final game of the 2008 season, the Fort Recovery High School football team fell victim to a powerful run game in a 40-27 loss the St. John's Blue Jays.
The Indians' defense was unable to slow down St. John's quarterback Wes Ulm Friday night, who scampered for 147 yards and a touchdown on the evening to lead a Blue Jay rushing attack that piled up 281 yards. Ulm also tossed for 88 yards and two TDs as the Jays built a first-half lead that doomed Fort Recovery.
After two touchdowns in the first quarter by St. John's, the Indians bounced back with two TD passes from Greg Kahlig to receivers Frank Thien, for 10 yards, and Craig Tobe, for 22 yards, in the first three minutes of the second quarter to even the score.
But from there St. John's posted four consecutive touchdowns, owning the end zone until Matt Braun scored on a 2-yard run for Fort Recovery with just seven minutes left in the game. It was too little too late for Indians as after a four-and-out by St John's they burned 3:30 off the clock to score their final touchdown on a 9-yard scramble from Kahlig.
Kahlig was 19-of-38 for 249 yards as he connected with seven different receivers in the losing effort, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. He added 25 yards rushing to lead the Fort ground game.
Craig Tobe led all receivers with six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Frank Thien made four grabs for 46 yards the other touchdown.
The Indians' rushing game was quiet, with Thien and Braun only adding seven rushes totaling 16 yards to Kahlig's 25 yards. The Tribe averaged only two yards per carry compared to the Blue Jays' 6.4.
Nine different backs carried for St. John's to pound out the near 300-yard rushing attack. It ran 42 times compared to only 14 pass attempts.
