Collegiate check-up

The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football team is 3-2 through its first five games. The third win, a 40-14 thumping of Oberlin College Saturday, Sept. 25, came thanks in large part to Jay County graduate Cameron Hummel.

Hummel, a sophomore quarterback, tossed a pair of touchdown passes and led the Engineers in rushing as they racked up 361 yards of total offense.

The 2003 Jay County graduate tossed his first touchdown pass eight yards to Jared Moore less than five minutes into the contest, giving Rose-Hulman a 14-0 lead. He added a 23-yard strike for a touchdown to Jared Lemond late in the first half.

Hummel finished 9-of-14 through the air for 97 yards and nearly matched that total on the ground. He had 10 carries for 92 yards in the victory.

Rose-Hulman followed the win over Oberlin with a 35-14 defeat at the hands of ninth-ranked Trinity University. Hummel completed five passes for just 21 yards in the defeat, and picked up 15 yards on seven carries.

Hummel is second on the team for the season in rushing with 207 yards and a 6.1 yards per carry average. He has tossed for 321 yards and four touchdowns.

Sara Hough

The 2004 Jay County graduate is continuing to show that she was one of the best players in school history. She currently is not only her team’s defensive lead, but is one of the top defenders in the country.

Hough, who regularly leads the Ancilla College volleyball team in digs, ranks 28th in the nation with an average of 4.6 digs per game. She did nothing but add to that total recently as the first-year program has accumulated a 17-14 record.

She paced the Chargers in digs and kills in a victory Thursday over Grand Rapids Community College with 14 and nine respectively.

She had a team-leading 26 digs, and finished second on the squad with eight kills, in a loss to 14th-ranked Kalamazoo Valley Community College Tuesday.

Hough also had an excellent weekend of play as Ancilla went 4-2 at the Oakland Community College Invitational. She finished the weekend with 74 digs and 41 kills, good for first and second on the team respectively.

She had 113 digs at the Kankakee Invitational a weekend earlier, while also putting down 43 kills. She led the Chargers with 27 digs in a loss to No. 3 Kellogg Community College.

Erin Smith

Anderson University’s star golfer picked up another award Sept. 27 when she was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week. It was her second such honor this season.

Smith, a 2001 Jay County graduate, earned the award this time for finishing as the match medalist at the four-team Hanover Invitational the previous weekend where she finished with a score of 168 for 36 holes. She led the Ravens to a second-place team finish.

The senior followed that effort with a couple of third-place results.

She was third in the Manchester Invitational Oct. 2, shooting an 18-hole score of 80. Smith then shot another 36-hole score of 164 at the DePauw Invitational to place third again.

Libby Michael

The 2001 Jay County graduate racked up a huge dig total Sept. 25 in the Anderson University volleyball team’s victory over Bluffton College as the Ravens have now built a 16-7 record on the season.

Michael, a senior, has been a key cog for Anderson from her libero spot. She racked up 41 digs in the win over Bluffton, by far her biggest defensive number over the last two weeks.

She also had two assists and an ace in the victory.

She added 26 digs, two kills, one ace and one assist in a loss to Millikin, and had 24 digs in a loss to Franklin College. She reached double digits in digs in each of the Ravens’ 10 matches since Sept. 23.

For the season Michael has notched 487 digs, tops on the team by nearly 300. She also has 21 aces, 14 kills, eight assists and one block.

Jenni Little

Michael is getting help on the Anderson volleyball team from this former Patriot teammate, who spent her first three seasons at Jay County before graduating from Kokomo.

Little blasted nine kills to help lead Anderson past Grove City Sept. 24. She also had one dig and one block in the victory.

She added six kills apiece in victories over Westminster, Bluffton and Monmouth and a loss to Franklin.

Little is averaging about 1.5 kills per game this year, good for 115 on the season. She also has 26 digs, 20 blocks and 16 assists.

Scott Steiner

The 2001 South Adams graduate continues to rack up the tackles for the Bluffton College football team.

The Beavers are now 3-2, thanks in large part to Steiner’s huge 17-tackle effort in a 35-13 victory over Manchester Oct. 2. He was the leading tackler in the game and also broke up a pair of pass attempts.

Steiner was second on the team in tackles in a 30-3 loss to Adrian a week earlier, also reaching double digits in that contest. He finished with 15.

The former Starfires is far and away the leader of the Bluffton defense, with a team-high 67 tackles on the year. That total is 28 more than the No. 2 man on the team.

He also has one blocked kick and one interception.

Nicole VanSkyock

Now a freshman at Anderson University, the 2004 Jay County graduate is making her mark for the Ravens’ cross country team.

VanSkyock helped Anderson to its best results of the season Sept. 11. She finished 23rd at the Madison Kiwanis Invitational as the Ravens took second place as a team.

She finished 29th with a time of 21-minutes, seven seconds as Anderson took fourth at the Indiana Intercollegiate’s meet.

Joscie Kaup

The 2004 Fort Recovery graduate continues to lead the Syracuse University volleyball team, which is now 13-5 on the season, with her defensive abilities.

The freshman libero has stepped right onto the court at the Division I level, and is the only Orange player to have played in every game this year. She has 253 digs on the season, a team-high by nearly 100.

Her best recent game came in the lone Syracuse win in its last five matches. She had 19 digs in a 22-30, 30-10, 30-23, 30-20 victory over St. Francis.

Kaup also had in digs in a loss to Albany and 11 in a Big East-opening loss to Notre Dame.

In addition to her defense, Kaup has 20 aces, 13 assists and four kills so far this season.

Kim Abbott

The University of Indianapolis junior shot a 193 to help the Greyhound women’s golf team to an eight-place finish at the 14-team University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagle Golf Classic recently.

Abbott, a 2002 Jay County graduate, opened with a 98. She had a better second round to finish in 67th place overall.

U of I finished its season with a fourth-place finish at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Abbott averaged a score of 94.25 per 18 holes this season.[[In-content Ad]]
