Jay's Weaver leads final relay to victory (02/04/07)

Collegiate Check-up

The Wabash College men's swim team missed out on its try for a perfect season. But a Jay County graduate was on the winning team in his final race of the regular season.

Kyle Weaver, a 2003 JCHS graduate, led off for the Little Giants' winning 200-yard freestyle relay team in their 179-119 loss Jan. 27 to the University of Indianapolis.

He was second in each of his other three events, falling just short in each of his individual events.

Weaver joined sophomores Blain Cooper-Surma and Jordon Blackwell and freshman Robert Fozkos in finishing first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2-minutes, 26.37 seconds.

The senior came closest to an individual win for the Little Giants (6-1) in the 50 freestyle, finishing just one hundredth of a second behind U of I's Alex Arestis in 21.57. He was only four hundredths off the winning pace set by Yaman Oguz in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.25.

Weaver also joined Cooper-Surma, Tony Caldwell and Robert Dent for a time of 1:38.11 to take second place in the 200 medley relay.

Cameron Hummel

Jay County - 2003

His Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology teammates showed him just how much his efforts meant, voting him both Offensive Player of the Year and Team MVP for the 2006 season.

Hummel missed several games this year with ankle injuries, but still earned the honors from his teammates as he led them to their first winning season since 1995. His 6-4 senior campaign capped a career in which he led the Engineers to three seasons of .500 or better after eight straight losing years prior to his arrival.

The former Patriot finished his senior season 67-of-128 for 971 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing four full games. He also carried the ball 57 times for 139 yards.

Hummel ranks third all-time in passing yards (4,417), passing touchdowns (27) and passing attempts (782) at Rose-Hulman. He is ninth on the all-time list with 1,787 yards, and also had 13 career rushing touchdowns.

Tyler Niekamp

Fort Recovery - 2003

Helped the University of Findlay men's basketball team extend its school-record winning streak to 18 games.

Niekamp made the only shots he took in each of the last two games. He hit for two points for the NCAA Division II No. 5 Oilers in a 72-56 win over Wayne State Thursday, and a 3-pointer Jan. 27 in a 75-70 triumph over Ferris State.

The senior also had a rebound and a steal Ferris State.

Findlay is now 19-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Jill Roughia

Jay County - 2005

Was one of just three members of the Huntington University women's track team to finish in the top 20 in an event Dec. 27 at Findlay University.

Roughia placed 20th in the 1,000-meter run, finishing in 3-minutes, 13.59 seconds. The meet was open to athletes from Division I through NAIA.[[In-content Ad]]
