JC Alive! club thanks helpers (4/25/03)

To the editor:

On behalf of the Jesus Christ Alive! Bible Club at Jay County High School, we would like to express our great gratitude to the many generous people of our community who contributed to this year’s homeless project. The project, sponsored by JC Alive!, was held on the weekend of April 5-6. Thirty JCHS students and four adult sponsors participated, fasting for 24 hours and sleeping outside with only the shelter of cardboard refrigerator boxes.

Our goals in this experience of homelessness were to raise awareness of homelessness in Jay County and to gather food and money for our local Jayland Homeless Shelter. To accomplish these goals would require the generous support of many individuals, and our community came through. We were able to raise $1,525.88 for the shelter, thanks to the donations of many individual community members, several area churches, and the Portland Lions Club. In addition, a dozen or so bags of food items were collected by area churches.

We would also like to extend thanks to a number of individuals and organizations who supported us in other ways. Ja-mar, Strohl’s, Liggett’s and Stewart Brothers provided the cardboard boxes in which we slept, and Mike McAfee supplied us with a port-a-pot. We also received enthusiastic cooperation and support from the Portland Park Board and the Portland Street Department. We greatly appreciate the work of Rob Weaver at the radio station and Barbara Wilkinson at The Commercial Review in promoting this event. Several ladies from the congregation of Westchester United Methodist Church supplied a much-appreciated meal, including hot potato soup, to warm and fill us after our 24-hour fast, and a sweet neighbor lady brought us cookies.

Finally, we would like to thank our four adult sponsors — Jerry Klopfenstein, Terry Fennig, Dwight Michael and Tyler Escoubas for their support and to note that this project could not have been a success without the hard work and incredible attitudes of the young people who chose to participate. We are grateful to the 30 high school students who bore the 23-degree weather without complaint or regret. The 2003 homeless project was a very rewarding experience, and we are incredibly thankful to everyone who played a role in making it possible.

Sincerely,

David Wolverton, Kinsey Fennig, Katie Alberson, Leslie Schwartzkopf, and Daniel Scott — JC Alive! Homeless Project Planning Team
