JC Chamber makes an impact
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
In October, 2008, I was hired as general manager of Moser Motors of Portland by Jim and Phil Eicher. In our discussion about the Portland store, I was told that they were at the end of their rope. It had not been profitable since the start of 2004. They asked what made me think I could turn the store around. I replied by asking, “Are you active in the local chamber and does Jay County even have a chamber? I was told the previous manager had attended a few meetings, but had not been very active. I told them in my 30-some years of managing auto stores I always start with the local chamber. They replied, “Do what you need, but if it does not turn a profit in 2009 we’re going to close it.” That would have put six people out of jobs and meant the loss of a source of automobile services and tax dollars in Jay County.
The first day on the job I went to the Jay County chamber office and was greeted by Vicki Tague. I informed her I was the new manager of Moser Motors of Portland. She welcomed me and asked how she could be of assistance. Vicki and the Jay County chamber were the number one reason Moser Motors is still in Jay County. She introduced me to Jay County, and she gave me the tools to get to know Jay County and the people that live here. In any community, people like to do business with people they know. If we had no chamber lunches, breakfasts, Expos and all of the other great events put on by the Jay County Chamber of Commerce, Buzz Keck and Moser Motors of Portland would not be here today to give back to Jay County. We support Jay County 4-H, the Jay County Fair, Jay County Hospital, John Jay Center, Jay School Corporation, Jay Community Center, Arts Place and so many other worthwhile organizations in this county. We can do this because we are a profitable business, and that began in 2009. Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time. I hope that The Jay County EDIT Advisory Committee will approved EDIT funds to the Jay County Chamber of Commerce so it will not be forced to cut services to the businesses of Jay County.
Thank you for reading this, and I hope you all understand the importance the Jay County chamber has in this county and the businesses it serves. Vicki Tague and her staff have impacted a lot of lives in Jay County.
