JC grad leads Ancilla
Collegiate Check-up
A Jay County High School graduate helped the Ancilla College softball team to a sweep Saturday.
Amber Edmundson, JCHS class of 2008, led the Chargers' offense in an opening 9-1 victory over College of Lake County, and then pitched them to an 8-0 victory in game two.
In the first game, Edmundson was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs. The game was tied 1-1 before Ancilla's first eight batters reached base in an eight-run bottom of the fourth.
Edmundson was lights out on the rubber in game two, giving up just three hits as she picked up her team-high seventh win of the year.
She also had four hits Tuesday as Ancilla dropped both games of a double-header to Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
The sophomore has a 3.45 ERA on the season with 46 strikeouts. She has 27 hits, 18 runs and 11 RBIs in 37 games.
Joseph Vormohr
Jay County - 2006
Turned in a third-place finish for the Hanover College men's track team at the Heartland Conference Championships hosted by College of Mount St. Joseph.
Vormohr's best effort came in the discus, where he finished in the top three by less than six inches.
His toss of 151 feet, 1 inch gave him the No. 3 spot in the event by just five inches over Bluffton's Jason Fisher.
He also scored points for the Panthers in the shot put, placing seventh at 44 feet, 2 ¾ inches. He had a toss of 110 feet, 4 inches for 15th place in the hammer throw.
Thomas McCowan
Jay County - 2008
Helped the Sinclair Community College baseball team to its second straight Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Championship.
McCowan went 3-5 with four walks and three RBIs in the tournament, which concluded with a 9-1 win in Sunday's championship game over Owens.
For the season the sophomore is hitting .336 with 38 hits, 24 runs and 18 RBIs in 37 games.
Jana Beitler
South Adams - 2009
Smacked three hits Saturday in a double-header loss for the Goshen College softball team against Calumet College.
Beitler went 1-for-2 in the opener, driving in two of the Maple Leafs four runs with a triple to center field in the fourth inning. She also scored a run, walked and stole a base.
In the second game the freshman tripled and scored a run in the fourth inning, and then singled and scored again in the sixth.
Beitler is third on the team with a .282 batting average. She has 29 hits, 23 runs, 14 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 38 games.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County - 2008
Scored points in two events for the Indiana Wesleyan University women's track team, which finished as the runner-up Saturday at the Mid-Central Conference Championship hosted by Goshen.
Johnson's best effort came in one of the Wildcats' favorite events, the 800-meter run. She finished fourth behind a pair of teammates - runner-up Lindsey Waggoner and third-place finisher Cassidy Wagner - with a time of 2 minutes, 19.58 seconds.
The sophomore was also eighth in the high jump at 4 feet, 9 inches.
Josh Atkinson
Jay County - 2006
Picked up his sixth win of the year for the Manchester College baseball team Saturday in a 10-7 triumph over Transylvania.
Atkinson went 6 2/3 innings before turning the ball over to Bryce Murphy, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and a walk. He struck out five batters.

Competed for the Kent State University men's track team Saturday at the Jesse Owens Track Classic hosted by Ohio State.
Shreve turned in the second-fastest time in the fifth heat of the 400-meter dash in 48.84 seconds. He was 21st overall.[[In-content Ad]]
