Collegiate Check-up
Billy Wellman has found his groove.
The 2009 Jay County High School graduate has recorded hits in each of the Ball State University baseball team’s last four games, and is now the Cardinals’ batting average leader.
Wellman started his streak with a pair of hits March 23 in Ball State’s 10-2 loss to Indiana, and added a double as the Cardinals (4-18) knocked off Ohio 2-1 in the first game of their series Friday. He also had a hit in the second game of the series, a loss, and added a hit and a walk as BSU defeated the Bobcats 1-0 on Sunday.
The sophomore now has eight hits on the year, lifting his batting average to a team-best .348. He has started five games and played in 10, and has two doubles, one run, one RBI and a .565 slugging percentage.
Amanda Johnson
Jay County – 2008
Picked up a third-place finish Saturday as her Indiana Wesleyan University women’s track team hosted the Polar Bear Invitational.
Johnson’s best effort came in the 800-meter run, where she was third in 2 minutes, 24.39 seconds. She trailed Butler’s Kaitlyn Love (2:18.13) and Hillsdale’s Marta Scheiwe in the field of 24 runners.
The junior also finished in six-way tie for fourth place in the high jump at 4 feet, 7 inches.
Josh Ludy
Jay County – 2008
Scored one run and drove in another Saturday during the Baylor University baseball team’s 6-3 loss to Kansas State.
Ludy singled to drive in teammate Chris Slater in the sixth inning against the Wildcats, and later scored on a single by Jake Miller. The three-run frame pulled the Bears (16-10) even, but KSU scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to take the win.
He also had a single in Friday’s 5-4 victory over Kansas State, and added a pinch-hit single Tuesday as Baylor fell 4-2 to Texas-San Antonio.
Chase Ingle
South – 2010
Earned one victory Saturday and Sunday as the Hanover College men’s tennis team competed at the Kerry Seward Memorial Tournament hosted by Wabash.
Ingle’s win came in the seventh-place match at No. 6 singles as he defeated Tyler Pewitt of Transylvania 6-4, 6-3. He lost to Doug Land of Coe 6-3, 6-0 in the opening round and also fell 6-2, 6-2 to Michael Weber of Rose-Hulman.[[In-content Ad]]
