JC, SA graduates compete at ISU
Collegiate Check-up
Katie Simmons and Hannah Moore have been racing since they were in middle school. They were within just four seconds of each other at Indiana’s biggest collegiate cross country meet of the season.
Simmons, a 2012 Jay County High School graduate, helped the IPFW women’s cross country team to a sixth-place finish at Saturday’s Indiana Intercollegiate. Moore (South Adams – 2012) turned in the second-best time for Huntington University, which finished 12th overall and fifth out of the 18 non-Division I schools.
Sam Heckard (South Adams – 2010) also competed at the meet at Indiana State for the Bethel College men’s team.
Simmons and Moore competed against each other at the 2005 Norwell Invitational when both runners were sixth graders and continued to battle each other throughout their middle and high school careers.
Simmons broke the 20-minute mark for a 5K race for the first time in her young collegiate career with a time of 19 minutes, 39.9 seconds. She was the No. 5 runner for the Mastodons while finishing 55th overall.
Moore continued to be one of the top runners for the Foresters as she trailed Simmons by less than four seconds with a time of 19:43.2. She was the No. 2 runner for the Foresters, finished 20th among non-Division I runners and was 61st overall.
Heckard placed 109th overall for Bethel Saturday with a time of 32:13.1 in the 7K race.
Maddie Moore
South Adams – 2009
Cut the Bluffton University women’s soccer team’s deficit in half Saturday before the Beavers slipped to a 3-1 loss to Wilmington.
After Bluffton fell behind 2-0 in the first 20 minutes, Moore got the home team back in the game when she scored on a shot from inside the 18-yard box off of an assist from Jessica Ramirez.
However, Wilmington scored late in the first half and the teams played a scoreless second half for the final margin.
Moore took two of the Beavers’ eight shots on goal in the game. She has scored two goals this season.
Frank Thien
Fort Recovery – 2009
Prevented a touchdown Saturday in the Ohio Northern University football team’s 43-7 loss to Heidelberg.
After ONU quarterback Tyler Rue threw a first-quarter interception, Thien made the tackle on at the 8-yard line. The Polar Bears’ defense stood strong on the ensuing drive, but went on to give up 29 points in the second half.
Dustin Wanner
South Adams – 2012
Played for the Taylor University football team in Saturday’s 24-14 loss to St. Ambrose.
Wanner is a freshman defensive back for the Trojans.[[In-content Ad]]
