For most of the last decade, the teams from the Muncie Central sectional have been relegated to the bottom three spots in the regional. The Patriots proved Monday they will have a chance to break that trend.
No. 18 Jay County, paced by two Katie Snyder wins, knocked off the 15th-ranked defending regional champion Carroll Chargers 100.85-100.8.
Over the last decade teams from the Muncie Central sectional group have broken into the top three of the regional just twice. Huntington North was the last, finishing third in 2006, and Jay County was also third in 2000.
“I just saw them all rally together as a team at the end, and they never do that,” said JCHS coach Lora Schlosser after the win. “This meant more.
“It’s really nice that the girls performed so well.”
Snyder powered the Patriots, who got three points in the first Indiana High School Gymnastics Coaches Poll of the season to earn their state ranking, as she started the meet with a winning score over 9.45 for her piked Tsukahara on the vault. Her other victory came on the floor exercise, where her 8.875 lifted JCHS to its win by just five hundredths of a point.

The sophomore was also second on the uneven bars with an 8.4 and third on the balance beam at 8.125.
Event wins for Carroll, which ended Bishop Dwenger’s run of 10 straight regional titles last season, came from Missy Chase (bars – 8.5) and Rachel Pratt (beam - 8.45).
Nikita Gundersen earned a pair of runner up finishes for the Patriots on the floor (8.7) and beam (8.425), and was also third on the bars (8.075). Shelby Pryor added a career-best 8.35 on the floor.
“Actually, it’s the same routine she competed last year, it’s just cleaned up,” said Schlosser of Pryor. “She’s hitting some of her big jumps.”
Kristen Ainsworth scored for JCHS on both the bars (7.7) and beam (7.675). Tasya Smith and Melynda Brackman followed Snyder on the vault at 8.575 and 8.5 respectively.
The lone Jay County athlete to win a junior varsity event Monday was Pryor, who posted an 8.25 on the vault.[[In-content Ad]]
