Chalk up two more wins for Pete Byrum.

The Jay County graduate and current Indiana Tech pitcher won each of his last two decisions for the Warriors as they closed the regular-season with a 32-22 record.

Byrum dominated Saint Xavier University (Chicago) in a 13-0 victory Thursday, May 6. He tossed four scoreless innings, allowing just five hits while striking out two batters.

He earned his other win April 30 as Indiana Tech topped Spring Arbor University 12-5.

The senior allowed five runs on 10 hits in nine innings of work. He struck out six and walked one.

With the pair of solid outings Byrum stepped to the head of the pack and has the best ERA among all Warrior starters at 2.22. He is second on the team in wins at 6-3 overall, and has struck out 43 batters in 65 innings this season.

Local Cougars end year

Fort Recovery graduate Sarah Schmitz and South Adams graduate Amanda Minch each had hits, but it was not enough as the St. Francis softball team finished its season with a couple of losses in the Mid-Central Conference tournament. The Cougars lost 4-2 to Indiana Wesleyan and 13-0 to Bethel to finish the year at 26-28.

Schmitz had her tournament hit with a double against Indiana Wesleyan. Amanda Minch added a single in the contest.

Carrie Nichols, another former Starfire, had a big game in the regular-season finale, an 11-3 loss in the second game of a double-header with IPFW. Nichols paced the St. Francis offense with a two-run home run in the first inning, giving it a temporary 2-1 lead before IPFW scored 10 times in the next two frames.

Minch also had a single and a run in the second game. She also notched a double in the first game, in which Schmitz had a single.

Minch finished her season as the top Cougar hitter with a .410 average. Of her 68 hits she had 21 doubles and one home run for a .554 slugging percentage.

She drove in 38 runs and scored 20.

Nichols was the power hitter for St. Francis, matching Kari Dearinger for a team-high eight home runs. She hit .318 on the year with 21 doubles, two triples and a .578 slugging percentage.

She also scored 24 runs and stole one base.

McClung paces Falcons

McClung had her best showing of the season in the hammer throw. She finished with a toss of 160 feet, one inch to finish seventh.

She also had the best showing for the Falcons at the Paddock Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan Saturday, May 8. She placed fourth in the shot put at 46 feet, 3 1/4 inches, and sixth in the hammer throw at 155 feet, 11 inches.

Heitkamp homers

Fort Recovery graduate Bob Heitkamp finished his career with the Bluffton College baseball team in a big way, leading it to a pair of wins in a season-ending, three-game series against Anderson.

Heitkamp played a big part in a 23-7 win in game-one of the series as he blasted a two-run home run. He followed by going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the final game of the season.

He also played well, hitting a three-run home run in the first game of a three-game series with Hanover April 30 and May 1. He went 1-for-2 with a double and three RBIs in the second game, which was the lone win for the Beavers in the series.

Kyle Alberson, a South Adams graduate, finished 2-for-3 with a double in game three.

Heitkamp experienced a power surge at the end of the season to finish first on the team with a .606 slugging percentage and second with a .310 batting average. He played in only about half of the games for the Beavers (11-29), but still led the team with 31 RBIs.

He finished with five home runs, six doubles, 31 RBIs, 21 runs and one steal.

Alberson was right behind Heitkamp in both percentage categories, hitting .309 for the year and slugging .602. He carried team highs with eight home runs, 12 doubles, 26 runs and six stolen bases.

He also drove in 30 runs.
