JC's Johnson wins 800 at Taylor
Collegiate Check-up
A Jay County High School graduate came through with a pair of victories Wednesday at the Taylor Outdoor Tri.
Amanda Johnson, JCHS class of 2008, won her lone individual event and contributed to a relay victory to lead the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s track team against Bethel and the host Trojans.
Johnson dominated the 800-meter run, finishing more than a second ahead of the field in 2 minutes, 23.73 seconds. Taylor’s Elaine Schmeltz was the runner-up at 2:25.14.
The senior also teamed with Allix Miller, Kyla Morgan and Tracey Tiernon to take the top spot in the 4x400 relay in 3:59.87.
Sam Heckard, a 2010 South Adams graduate, also competed at the event and finished eighth for Bethel in the 3,000 run in 10:17.57.
At the Goshen College Invitational Saturday, Heckard placed 13th in the 5,000 run in 17:41.33.
Allison Beitler, also a 2010 graduate of SAHS, took fourth in the women’s 5,000 run for the host Maple Leafs at the Goshen Invitational.
Josh Ludy
Jay County – 2008
Drove in two runs March 30 as the NCAA Division I No. 21 Baylor University baseball team defeated Oklahoma State 7-4.
Ludy had an RBI double in the first inning and drove in a run with a walk in the eighth. He finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two walks and a run.
The senior drew two walks in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Oklahoma State, and had a hit and an RBI as Baylor (22-7) finished the sweep of the series Sunday with a 5-4 win.
Jordan McMillan
Jay County – 2011
Turned in one of the Ball State University track team’s 11 top-10 finishes at the Mike Poehlein Invitational hosted Friday and Saturday by Purdue.
McMillan finished fourth out of 20 competitors in the 100-meter dash in 12.78 seconds. She also finished the 200 dash in 26.82 for 13th place out of 29.
Billy Wellman
Jay County – 2009
Was one of three Ball State University baseball players to have two hits Wednesday in a 6-5, 15-inning loss to Indiana.
Wellman had singles for the Cardinals (5-20) in the second and sixth innings. He also went 1-for-3 Sunday in an 18-2 loss to Kent State.
Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Finished 12th for the Indiana University East men’s golf team Saturday at the Berea College Tee-Off Tournament.
Houck posted an opening-day 89 on Friday at Battlefield Golf Club. He followed with an 86 Saturday for a 175 total as the Red Wolves finished second out of five teams.
Brandon Reynard
Jay County – 2009
Turned in a top-10 finish for the Indiana Tech men’s track team Saturday at the North Carolina State Raleigh Relays.
Reynard took 10th place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.18. He also teamed with Nick Radionoff, Joseph McNabb and D’Quan Ruth for eighth place in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Adam Gray
Jay County – 2009
Competed for the University of St. Francis men’s golf team Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan University Invitational.
Gray shot 84 on the first day of competition for the Cougars, who finished sixth out of 10 teams. He came back with a 77 on the second day for a 161 total to tie for 25th.
Jana Beitler
South Adams – 2009
Was the only Goshen College softball player with multiple hits Saturday in a 16-11 loss to St. Francis.
Beitler finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the shootout. She was also 2-for-3 March 29 in a 2-1 victory over Grace.
The junior had a double and a run Wednesday as the Maple Leafs (9-21) fell 10-5 to Goshen. On Saturday, she had a single in a 10-5 victory over Purdue North Central.
She scored a run Friday in an 8-6 loss to Purdue North Central and had a hit and two runs in a 10-0 victory over Indiana Tech.
Megan Taylor
Jay County – 2011
Ran for the Manchester College women’s track team at Saturday’s Hanover Invitational.
Taylor just missed a top-10 finish as she posted a time of 2 minutes, 31.24 seconds. Huntington’s Cendall Ogle was 10th in 2:30.74.
Megan Adams
Jay County – 2008
Played for the Huntington University women’s tennis team as it dropped matches Thursday to Trine and Saturday to Davenport.
Adams competed at No. 5 singles Saturday, falling 6-0, 6-0 to Angelica Woods. She teamed with Lauren Sunderman at No. 2 doubles in an 8-1 defeat.
