Jefferson precinct moving to Jay CC
Jay County Commissioners
Jefferson Township voters will be casting ballots in a new location in the fall.
Jay County Clerk Ellen Coats reported to the Jay County Commissioners this morning that after Tuesday's primary election, she received complaints from Dan Daniels, chairman of Jay County Scout Facilities, Inc., about damages to the scout lodge by voters and poll workers.
Coats repeated a variety of complaints and damages including a handicapped parking sign that was hit and knocked down by a car, coffee pots left on and burned, furniture that was moved around and a general mess left by poll workers who did not clean up when they were finished.
"The $65 you pay for that isn't enough," for use of the facility, Daniels reportedly told Coats, who added that Daniels said he would like to see the polling place moved.
Commissioners Milo Miller Jr. and Faron Parr - commissioner Jim Zimmerman was absent - and Coats tried to think of a place inside Jefferson Township to move to, but couldn't come up with anything.
"I don't think there's anywhere else that's handicapped accessible," Miller said.
Miller suggested that Jefferson Township voters be moved to the Jay Community Center, which is already the polling place for five Wayne Township precincts, along with Noble Township.
Coats said that the change can be made before the fall election and that she'd get working on it.
"I just have to notify all those voters that their precinct is moving," she said.
In other business this morning, the commissioners:
•Gave courthouse superintendent Roger McBride permission to get the parking lot at the Jay County Health Department repaired.
McBride presented the commissioners with a quote from A. Landon Excavating for the repair at a cost of $1,462.
•Reviewed a proof of a commemorative plaque that will be hung in the Jay County Jail expansion presented by Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz. The plaque will contain the names of the sheriff, commissioners, Jay County Council members, auditor and Jay County Building Corporation members.[[In-content Ad]]
