Jefferson voting back at cabin?
Jay County Commissioners
A decision on the Jefferson Township polling site for the fall election is still in limbo as Jay County Commissioners are in Freeman Scouting Facility.
Last week the commissioners explored the possibility of paving a portion of the parking lot at the Jay County Solid Waste District office on Ind. 67 at county road 400 South. Quotes for that work, however, came back at about $3,275.
Commissioners’ president Milo Miller Jr. said Monday that he has talked with Gary Maitlen to try to smooth out the relationship between the county and scout facility management so that the polls can be hosted there again.
The commissioners received a complaint in May after the primary election claiming that poll workers abused the facility. Since then, the commissioners have been looking for a new place to host the Jefferson Township precinct with no luck.
Commissioner Jim Zimmerman spoke Monday with Maitlen, who asked if the county would have liability coverage if someone was injured while voting at the scout facility.
The commissioners placed a call to their insurance agent to find out if the county’s coverage would extend to polling places, but did not have an answer as of late afternoon.
If the county can secure the scout facility this fall, the commissioners would have until 2012 to find a permanent solution.
“After this election we’ll know if we’ll be going (back) there,” said commissioner Faron Parr.
In other business Monday, the commissioners:
•Received an award from the United States Census Bureau for the county exceeding a 78 percent mail in rate. The national mail rate was 77 percent for the census.
Aside from the county, Portland, Dunkirk, Redkey, Bryant, Pennville, and Bearcreek Township received the award.
•Heard a presentation from John Glaub of PIE Inc. about insurance. Glaub will review the county’s coverage and produce a benefits package for the county.
•Were informed by 911 director Bill Baldwin and Jay County Sheriff Ray Newton that the county’s 911 cell phone mapping/locating program is currently out of service. They are working to get the service restored.[[In-content Ad]]
