Johnson 1st at Classic
Collegiate Check-up
Alyssa Johnson racked up a couple of wins. Holly Stein posted a trio of top-three finish.
The two of local graduates were women's track standouts in the field April 18 at the Spartan Classic hosted by Manchester College.
Johnson, a 2006 Jay County High School graduate, dominated her only individual event for Taylor University. She was nearly five seconds faster than the runner-up in the 800-meter run, recording a winning time of 2-minutes, 19.16 seconds.
The junior also keyed a first-place relay. She teamed with LaJoya Smith, Stephanie Kenney and Morgan Achteroff for a time of 4:08.34 in the 4x400 relay.
Stein, who graduated from Fort Recovery in 2007, finished as the runner-up in the javelin. She had a toss of 30.85 meters.
She narrowly missed finishing second in the shot put as well as her toss of 11.37 meters was just one centimeter shorter than runner-up Lindsey Machamer of the host team. She also placed third in the discus at 36.87 meters.
Josh Shatto
Jay County - 2006
Pitched the IPFW baseball team to an 11-7 victory over Oakland April 18.
Shatto started the game and allowed four runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three batters and walked six as he improved to 3-1 on the year.
Thomas McCowan
Jay County - 2008
Also playing for the IPFW baseball team, McCowan recorded his first collegiate hit April 17 in a 7-6 loss to Oakland.
McCowan entered the game at third base in the ninth inning and hit a two-out single to right field in the bottom of the inning.
Two days later the freshman got the start at designated hitter as IPFW defeated Oakland 4-3. He had a one-out single in the fourth inning and drew a walk in the sixth.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Won an event as she helped the Huntington University women's track team to victory April 18 in the eight-team Wilmington College Invitational.
Roughia earned her victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She won by about nine seconds with a time of 12-minutes, 19.33 seconds.
The senior also placed fourth in the 5,000 run in 20:46.46.
Amber Edmundson
Jay County - 2008
Was one of the offensive leaders for the Ancilla College softball team April 16 in a double-header against Kellogg Community College.
Edmundson totaled three hits as the Chargers fell 6-3 in the opener and 6-5 in extra innings in game two. She scored once and had a stolen base.

Placed first in her only event April 17 for the Indiana Wesleyan women's track team at the AU Pre-Conference Meet hosted by Anderson.
Johnson defeated a trio of runners from the host Ravens in the 400-meter dash.

Also competed at the AU Pre-Conference Meet for the host Ravens, helping Anderson to runner-up efforts in a pair of relays.
Mescher was joined Maggie Lucas, Michelle Roth and Michelle Rowlett for second place in the 4x100-meter relay in 52.11 seconds. She also teamed with Ashley Casterline, Kaitlyn Gingerich and Alisha Sink for a runner-up time of 4-minutes, 33.54 seconds in the 4x400 relay.
In her lone individual event, Mescher placed fifth in the 100 dash in 14.1.

Pitched in both games of a double-header April 18 as his Manchester College baseball team lost 10-3 and 12-11 to Anderson.
Atkinson suffered the loss in the opener thanks to an unearned run. He pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs - one earned - on one hit and one out while striking out one.
The junior also entered the game in relief in game two, allowing four runs - three earned - on nine hits. He struck out two batters and did not issue a walk.
Joseph Vormohr
Jay County - 2006
Had a second-place finish for the Hanover College men's track team as it competed April 17 at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet.
Vormohr's best effort came in the discus, where he finished less than two feet from victory. His runner-up toss traveled 138 feet, 10 inches while Devin Kelley of Wabash won at 140 feet, 5 inches.
The junior placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 1 ΒΌ inches. He was also 10th in the hammer throw at 122 feet even.[[In-content Ad]]
