Johnson 61st in NAIA
Collegiate Check-up
Alyssa Johnson finished off her collegiate cross country career Saturday at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships.
The 2006 Jay County High School graduate placed 61st in the race at Fort Vancouver National Historic Sit in Vancouver, Wash. She finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run at the NAIA national track meet in May.
Johnson posted a time of 19:27 at the NAIA meet that included 330 runners. She was one second behind Point Loma freshman Breelan Matranga.
Amanda Johnson, who is a sophomore at Indiana Wesleyan, finished 14 spots behind her sister in 20:27.
She also competed in the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship, placing 20th for the third-place Wildcats in 19:25.
Maddie Moore
South Adams - 2009
Earned the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Sportsmanship award for women's soccer.
Moore, a freshman, earned the award for "demonstrating the ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition" while playing for the Bluffton University women's soccer team. She was the only freshman to earn the honor.
Tyler Rigby
Jay County - 2006
Was named to the all-tournament team as he led the IU-East men's basketball team at the IU/PU Challenge hosted by Purdue University - North Central.
Rigby racked up 25 points in leading his Red Wolves to an 80-74 victory Nov. 14 over the host Panthers in the tournament championship game. He shot 7-of-14 from the field and made 10 free throws while adding two steals and one rebound.
He totaled 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal in IU-East's tournament-opening win Nov. 13 over Purdue University - Calumet.
Rigby also had 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and on assists in a one-point loss Nov. 17 to Ohio Christian, and 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and one assist Nov. 10 in a 78-59 win over Union.
Tiff Gaerke
Fort Recovery - 2007
Helped the University of Dayton volleyball team capture the Atlantic 10 tournament championship Sunday with a 22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-7 comeback win over No. 20 Saint Louis.
Gaerke had five kills, five digs and three blocks in the title match for the Flyers, who also won the A-10 regular-season crown. She had three kills and a block in Dayton's semifinal tournament win over Temple.
The junior also had seven kills, five digs, four blocks and an ace Nov. 11 as the Flyers (25-3) beat Wright State, and three kills, two blocks and two assists Nov. 14 in a win over George Washington.
Casey Kenney
Jay County - 2009
Placed fourth for the University of Indianapolis wrestling team in the 125-pound freshman/sophomore bracket at the Missouri Open.
Kenney won his opening match of the tournament by pinning Eduardo Domiguez of Harper in 2 minutes, 29 seconds. He dropped his quarterfinal match, and fell just short in the third-place match as he lost 8-6 to Meramec.
He also competed at the Michigan State Open, falling to Ohio University's Gabe Ramos by an 11-4 decision.
Cori Vormohr
Jay County - 2009
Turned in a ninth-place finish for the Ball State University women's swim team Nov. 14 as part of its victory at the 2009 House of Champions Invitational hosted by IUPUI.
Vormohr was less than two seconds off the winning pace in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing ninth in 1 minute, 10.26 seconds. She was just one hundredth of a second behind Butler's Megan Wesler.
The freshman was also 10th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.81, and placed 13th in the 100 butterfly at 1:01.82.
Joanna Snyder
Fort Recovery - 2009
Made her first collegiate start Sunday for the Ohio Northern University women's basketball team Sunday.
Snyder finished with two points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Polar Bears' 89-64 loss to Hanover.
She totaled four points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal in Saturday's 65-62 win over Transylvania.
Joseph Vormohr

Started at left guard for the Hanover College football team Nov. 14 as the Panthers finished their season with a 42-28 loss to Franklin.
The Hanover offense gained 504 yards of total offense, including 200 on the ground, behind Vormohr and his mates on the offensive line.
