Johnson leads Jay grads at Little State

Alyssa Johnson turned in the best performance April 11 at a meet full of Jay County High School graduates.

Johnson posted a runner-up finish for the Taylor University women's track team at the Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan. Also competing from JCHS were Amanda Johnson, of the host Wildcats, twins Ian and Mitchell Thomas, Jill Roughia and Sarah Mescher.

Alyssa Johnson, who graduated from JCHS in 2006, ran to a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4-minutes, 43.25 seconds. She was less than two seconds behind champion Lauren Reich of DePauw in a field of 26 runners, and her time qualified her for the NAIA Championships.

The junior also teamed with Morgan Achteroff, LaJoya Smith and Stephanie Kenney to place sixth in the 4x400 relay in 4:08.87.

Amanda Johnson (2008), Alyssa's sister, posted the No. 2 individual finish among the group of former Patriots. She was fourth in the 800 run in 2:21.86 as Indiana Wesleyan took four of the top six spots.

Ian Thomas (2005) ran the fourth-fastest time in the 5,000 run in the history of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He placed seventh in the event with his time of 15:20.31.

Mitchell Thomas (2005) was 22nd in the event at 15:53.67.

Jill Roughia (2005) of Huntington University also recorded a top-10 individual finish. She crossed the finish line in 12:23.05 to place ninth in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Sarah Mescher (2008) ran in a pair of relays for Anderson University. She teamed with Maggie Lucas, Dani Rufenacht and Candace Long for seventh in the 4x400 at 4:18.18, and joined Lucas, Michelle Roth and Michelle Rowlett for ninth in the 4x100 in 53.26.

Josh Atkinson

Jay County - 2006

Earned his fifth win of the season April 10 as his Manchester College baseball team defeated Franklin 8-6.

Atkinson tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits. The Spartans scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to give him the win.

The junior also pitched Saturday in an 11-0 loss to Franklin, getting the start and allowing three runs - two earned - on seven hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out seven batters.

Holly Stein

Fort Recovery - 2007

Picked up All-Ohio honors in a pair of events April 11 as her Defiance College women's track team competed at the All-Ohio Division III Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.

Stein placed in the top eight in two events at the All-Ohio meet for the second straight year, led by a fifth-place effort in the javelin at 108 feet, 9 inches. She also tossed the discus 115 feet, 4 inches to finish in sixth place.

The sophomore was 11th in the shot put at 35 feet, 2 inches.

Josh Ludy

Jay County - 2008

Started the path to the winning run for the No. 7 Baylor University baseball team April 11 in its 8-7 win, 11-inning win over Missouri.

Ludy led off the bottom of the 11th inning as a pinch hitter for starting catcher Greg Gilme. He drew a walk, and then gave way to pinch runner Chris Slater, who eventually scored the winning run.

Josh Shatto

Jay County - 2006

Toss two innings of relief Sunday as IPFW's baseball team lost 7-5 to Southern Utah.

Shatto came on in relief and allowed one run on one hit and three walks in two innings. He also struck out three batters.

The junior started against the University of Dayton Wednesday, giving up two runs on one hit and three walks in two innings while striking out three.[[In-content Ad]]
